Laparotomy moved up by one month...questions...

I just got a call that my laparotomy has been rescheduled to the end of this month!  I'm very happy, but also a little freaked about it.
I have a slow growing dermoid on my right ovary measuring 4.2x3.5x3.1 (as of last measurement in Aug).
My doctor has chosen the laparotomy route because I still want the option of having children, and he feels that the best way to repair any damage is by going through the major surgery.
I have an office job, and was told that I should be able to return to work on a full time basis 3-4 weeks after surgery.  Everything I've read says that 4 would be the earliest, and more likely it could go to 6 weeks.  What have been your recovery times?  Any suggestions on preparing for the surgery?
Thanks,
Dana

i am now 4 weeks post op following removal of dermoid cyst via laparotomy. my doc said 6 weeks minimum, he doesnt want me to drive until then either. i am feeling great compared to last week, i certainly would have found it hard going back then, this week i feel i could work but my scar has only just healed following an infection, and my job involves some lifting and lots of driving, so im not rushing back, possibly 6/7 weeks.

in terms of preparing for the op,try and relax, keep your mind occupied so that you stay calm, a good book helped me. eat properly, especially foods rich in iron. any preparation you may need such as an enema or shaving the op site will be given by the nurses.expect some constipation and lots of gas a few days after the op,prune juice, lots of fruit ,hot tea, peppermint tea all good for this. you will probably be offered morphine the first day, this makes some people nauseous, but its still good to have it. the next few days the pain isnt bad ,you just feel sore, try and walk a bit if you can, it helps the gas.
my best advice in the recovery period is listen to your body, we are all different, but you will need to take it easy, you improve day by day. best wishes sharon.
