HI Marty,
Ashley had etoposide infused during her chemo. This is a pretty aggressive treatment. It has potential side effects on the lungs and Ashley was given bactrum (an antibiotic) to ward off any possibility of chemo related pnuemonia. Also, prior to receiving the etoposide, they infused benedryl in the case that there was an allergic reaction. It did make Ashley sick, but they found a good anti-nausea combo that worked. If she has the kind of issues she had when she first took it, she could try taking benedryl prior to her dose. I hope this helps out. I'm praying for you both.
Take Care and God Bless,
Bob
So glad Leslee had a good night..maybe it was just a one time deal with the side effects..I will continue to pray for her and you...Love, Gia
Mayo says from a trial that the pill seems to work better and that most had a better quality of life, Les was thankful for that. she would much rather take a pill every day for 20 days and then have a 10 day break, guess we will see what happens.
I did notice they do epotoside as an iv also, sometimes as a combo too. Wonder how they decide to do pills or iv. I see several ladies are doing cytoxan as a pill, and I did iv. It is so confusing the way all our doctors to these chemos in different sequence and combinations. I hope Leslee has no more problems and this works, Donna
When she called early this morning she said she had a good night and felt good today, I do not understand the bouncing back and forth at all. Maybe it is the nausea/dizzyness pill that helped. She is helping plan a grand daughters 1st birthday today, She won't be going back to Mayo for 2 more weeks to have the blood work done. We should be able to tell if this chemo is working by then. She says she has no appitite so I suggested she get the things she really likes and eat them, also has a metal taste in her mouth. Mayo told her they already have a new chemo lined up for her if this one does not work, but les couldn't remember the name. Thanks again girls, don't worry about me, I am fine. I keep very busy.
I'm sorry but I have no knowledge about this pill to be able to help. I just wanted you to know I am keeping Leslee in my prayers..there has to be another chemo out there for her. ~~~~Joanne
Marty,
I can see where LesLee would be worried about taking it again, and I think that if the same thing happened, I would get her to the ER just to be on the safe side.
I have heard of Etoposide but know nothing about it.
I can tell that all of this is taking its toll on you Marty. But please remember that there are a lot of drugs still out there that they can try. Why are they telling you this is her last chance? chemocare.com is a good site for finding out about any kind of chemo drug, its uses and side effects ect.
If I am remembering right, they haved not tried avastin on her yet and I think that may be a good choice. You have seen here that most everyone has had good results.
I hope that she has a much better night tonight and that this will start working for her. I know that you are very upset now but Marty you need to remember to take care of you too. Stop, take a few deep breaths and try to remember all of the research you have done. We are all praying for you and LesLee both.
I will be looking for an update tomorrow.
Love Chris
Keeping my fingers crossed Marty, glad Mayo called, as I was so sorry to not be able to help you out. Hope all goes well for Leslee tonight...take care
I am praying so much for Leslee..please let this work for her....I hope she has a good night and she will be in my thoughts all night..please let us know how she did tonight..I am certain you will be tossing and turning worrying and my thoughts will be with you also..Love, Gia
Leslee talked with Mayo late this afternoon, they want her to give it another try tonight, they ordered a better nausea pill for her, told her to take it 1/2 hour prior to pill, then go to bed. Les is scared, she doesn't want to feel like that again. Talked to her for about 2 hours tonight, trying to boost her up, sure hope this works this time. Thanks girls for your help.
Etoposide and cisplatin is what my step-mom is going to start next week. She is dx with non-small cell lung cancer from a mass in her throat/neck area. I could tell her about the cisplatin in great detail, but know nothing about the etoposide. I agree with Judy. There has to be something for her. Marie
has she done abraxane and avastin together. I friend of a friend was on hospice, and things looking really bad, and then these 2 drugs started to work .. CA125 going down and things looking much brighter. There HAS to be something. Judy
I have forgotten what chemos she has done. There are some ladies on another forum that have done navelbine and ifosfamide, still searching.
she stopped the pill, took just the 1 dose, Mayo was to call back this afternoon
Etoposide (VP-16) Type I. HSRs can occur and manifest as chills, fever, shortness of breath, low blood pressure or wheezing. The drug should be stopped and the reaction treated with dexamethasone, diphenhydramine, and epinephrine (if necessary). For mild reactions, the infusion may be restarted at a slower infusion rate along with IV fluids and gradually increased with blood pressure monitoring.

I tried searching too Marty..sorry cannot help you, I can feel your pain and fear and wish I could help. You are both in my prayers, hope Mayo can get it straightened out.
Did she call Mayo yesterday? I googled everything on Etoposide, the only allergy was if she was allergic to any of the pill ingredients. Is she still taking it?
I really need some help with this, they are saying this is her last chance.
Sorry, I have no info for you. Keeping you all in my prayers. Judy
