Lost in Translation

Can you please explain to me the results of my transabdominal/transvaginal ultrasound? When a possible cyst was found by accident during an MRI, my doctor was upset to discover that her staff had not called me to come in to discuss the "abnormal" results.  She sent me for the US procedure.  Again I did not hear from my doctor's office.  I went back to the imaging center to get a copy of the results so I could try to figure out if I am o.k.  Please help.

Transabdominal and transvaginal images show the uterus to be retroverted and heterogeneous measuring 6.5 x 3.7 x 4.9 cm.  The endometrial double thickness is prominent at 1.0cm.  There are small nabothian cysts along the cervix the largest of which measures 0.4 cm. in maximum dimension.

The right ovary measures 2.6 x 1.7 x 2.6 cm and contains small follicles.

The left ovary measures 2.5 x 2.1 x 2.3 cm and contains a 1.5cm cyst.

There is no free fluid.

1.  Prominence of the endometrial double thickness at 1.0cm.  Please correlate with menstural sysle and follow.
2.  1.5cm. left ovarian cyst.

I am 37yo, morbidly obese, and not taking birth control pills.  I have had irregular periods for ten or more years.  I have dibetes.

Is this enough info to get me going in some direction?

Thank you.

Hi There,
You have an essentially normal ultrasound except that the lining of the uterus (the endometrial stripe) is somewhat thick.
the ovaries are essentially normal. For a 1.5 cm cyst (tiny) , i would get a follow up in 3 months.

Now if you are overweight and not having regular periods, you may develop a premalignant condition of the uterine lining called endometrial hyperplasia or you could even develop a cancer of the uterine lining ( endometrial cancer)
The risk comes from excess estrogen. Estrogen can come from the fat cells. Additionally, if you are not having regular menstrual cycle, the ovaries are producing estrogen which stimulates the growth of the lining but the ovaries are not producing progesterone which stabilizes the lining and causes you to have a period .

You need an endometrial biopsy or a dilation and curettage (D&C) to check the lining of your uterus
take care
