Low Level HCG and Post Menopausal

by NancyQue, Jun 05, 2009 10:47PM
I am 54 yrs old, have been post menopausal for 8 yrs.  During routine preg test b/4 colonoscopy, levels of HCG were 8, then repeated test was 7.  Week later 3rd blood test HCG was 9.  Went to see my Gyno and nothing unusual noted in pelvic exam.  Sonograms performed (external & internal) showing only small polyp in uterus.  Dr feels we should just watch the situation and repeat blood test in one yr at my annual...but he emphasized that if I feel any bloating or discomfort of any type in my abdomen to call immediately.  Because I've had some diverticulitis attacks (hence routine colonoscopies and to remove few polyps) do I assume any future pelvic pain is the diverticulitis or something more sinister (OC)?  I don't know whether to call my gastrologist or gynocologist?

I suffered with ovarian cysts for over 20 yrs and since menopause I've never felt better (other than diverticulitis attacks couple times a yr).  Should I get a 2nd opinion?  Or trust that I am one of those post menopausal women who still produce HCG in small doses for unknown reasons?

Hi There,
thank you for your question. low level HCG is not rare in the early menopausal years . It is probably due to pituitary secretion of HCG at this time of life.

this is an excellent website with great review articles:

I would suggest that your doctor send your blood test to the US HCG reference lab. This website I referenced gives information on this.
best wishes
