Low platelets counts

Low platelets counts

Three weeks ago my platelets counts was 177 and now it dropped down to 50, and of course, my chemo has been postponed, I wondered why it dropped so quickly and so deep, what can I do to boost it up so that I can get the chemo at the next appointment? since the doctor told me no medicine could help to boost it up and it is not low enough to receive a transfusion of platelets, I am very concerned about this, any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I can understand your concern, has your doctor mentioned Aranesp injections?
I got those shots when my RBC or hemoglobin would drop to an abnormally low number.

How about iron tablets, or foods rich in iron like liver, or cooked spinach.

Let us know how it goes when you have your next appointment.

Thank you very much for your information, my doctor told me that platelets has nothing to do with the RBC, and there is no medication to boost the platelets and he will do the transfusion when it is very very low under 20.   But the problem is that  my count is not low enough to have  the transfusion but neither high enough to receive chemo, and he told me there is no other option then just wait until the body rebuild the platelet to the satisfactory level (at least 100) to be able to resume the chemo.  That's why I want to see whether there is any person with the same problem and have any other suggestion than WAIT....

hi what type of chemo do they have you on- did you get a call from the dr,'s office or lab - i used to get these calls telling not to  fall, brush teeth too hard or do anything that would cause bleeding abd to basically stay in all weeekend and do nothing- i had to get a transfusion after each taxol carb treatment - my platlets got so low -then they would start to climb- after the transfusion the color would actually return to my face, and yes it did hurt to walk it effected the bone marrow as well but it also came back it took a while,, but talk to your team about it - or your m.,d.take care

I know this sounds odd and probably has no scientific base, but I don't think it could hurt you.  I too posted this question about what could be done about low platelet count besides waiting and someone suggested eating the red casings on peanuts.  So I did eat some everyday until next labs and my platelet count was up enough for me to get treatment?.  So I don't know, but I don't think it could hurt you.  My Onc. let me have treatment last time even though my count had dropped to 59.  but now they are up again to 140.  Good luck and let me know.  Kerry
