MRI Results and three ovaries? HUH

MRI Results and three ovaries? HUH

So I called my doctor to get my results. Background: 25yr old, unexplained pain in my pelvis and lower back for a year now. Trans vaginal ultrasound showed a 5 cm cyst next to my left ovary and my left ovary was also enlarged at 4.9 cm.  I also have a hydrosalpinx in my right fallopian tube.
Results:  My MRI results showed that my left ovary was two different sizes yes I said two sizes for one ovary.  My doctor said that they must have made an error.  He also said that the radiologist did not even comment on my hydrosalpinx.  They said that the cyst on my right ovary was a simple cyst, and they suggested that I might have PCOS.  My doc is not buying PCOS, he says that I dont have any of the symptoms. My doctor said that because of the errors in the report he really cannot tell me anything until he speaks directly with the radiologist.  SHould I even trust these people?  They told me I have two left and one right ovary.  I am just so frustrated with this constant waiting game.  Should I get another opinion? Has this ever happened to anyone?  How much more reliable is an MRI compared to a transvaginal US?  Please let me know what you think all your opinions are valuble to me.  Thanks.  Marge

Hi there...how frustrating to get that kind of report.  Usually, a MRI is much more specific.  I had an MRI after my transvaginal and it was very detailed.  It sounds like your dr. thinks the report was odd too so I would wait and see what he says.  I hope you are feeling better.

Hi..Not trying to make light, but I once saw a show where a woman had 3 ovaries and a lot of pain. It turned out it was her undeveloped twin inside her and they didn't know it until they went to do a hysterectomy. I am not saying that is what you have by no means...just thought it was interesting...

What I would say is take your mri picture scans to another radiologist for a reading and if things are still odd...ask for a repeat mri. Maybe what the radiologist was reading was another cyst or something...Just a guess. I am not sure which is better...a TVU or MRI but would guess an MRI.

I was curious if the doctor said what the symptoms of PCOS are versus regular cysts. I was asking since I have several cysts.

I hope you don't have to wait to long. I am sorry this  has to be frustrating, but I am glad that the doctor isn't afraid to question the results.

I am feeling better.  I notice that my pain increases with movement and standing.  I spoke with my doctor and he expalined in more detail why the report was so erroneous.  The MRI report stated that I had a 4.3 cm cyst in my 2.5 cm ovary.  In other words I fit a large box in a small box, um that's impossible.  My doctor spoke with the radiologist today and voiced his concerns about the report.  The radiologist said the he would rewrite the entire report and take my US results into consideration.  My one issue: is he going to suddenly confirm what the US said because he has it to refer to.  I am seriously considering getting a second opinion.  I dont trust the radiologist.  Such a sad day when I realized how human doctors really are.  I am so glad that my doc is asking questions and being diligent.

Poor you!  I can imagine how frustrated you are.   I would not trust the radiologist either.  I had a long history of ultrasounds and I believe sometimes the problem is, the medical people who write the reports did well in Science in school, and sucked in English!  Over the years I read some ridiculous reports.   I would definitely demand a repeat TV ultrasound.  Can you go somewhere else?   Sure, try to get an MRI if possible, I think you've earned it.
Your doctor should not, though, discount the possibilty of PCOS... he shouldn't rule anything.  It is very possible to have PCOS without symptoms.  You need to be thoroughly evaluated, including hormone testing.  Remember that the US really doesn't tell you everything... that you often do need surgery to get the final answers  (unfortunately).  Your cyst sizes are not huge though and it's very good that they said "simple" so please try not to panic (how very hard is that, we know).
Keep after at, glad you have a good doctor, let us know how you are doing and best of luck to you....

I am so angry, my doctor just called me and told me that he does not want to perform the lap surgery.  He says the revised MRI report showed that I have multiple cysts but they are not big enough to cause any concern.  He said even though I have a thickened tube he does not think it is causing me the pain. Many women have complained that fluid filled tubes do cause pain!  I am so sick of this.  He thinks I may have intersistial cystysis (some bladder problem)  which I dont because people who suffer from that condition urinate 30-60 times a day.  I barely go 5 times.  I am so tired of this maze everytime  I think I am getting closer and closer I hit a dead end.   I hate that he is making me feel like I am forcing him to perform the lap.  I woke up this morning and I could barely walk, I am always nauseous and cant even touch my pelvis.  I just want to give up and just deal with all this pain and suffer in silence.

Hi.  I understand your frustration.  When I had a CT the report said I had a "huge" ovarian cyst measuring 1.9 cm.  I knew there was a misreading, but which way?  When my GYN called the radiologist reread the scan and determined that "huge" was actually two. Hmm.  My GYN never saw 2 cysts at all, only one.

Have you had a CT done?  I don't like the way your doctor is deferring to the MRI report when it was so confusing, even to him.  Did he offer to do a repeat vaginal ultrasound?  I would maybe go for a 2nd opinion somewhere for your own peace of mind.  I also don't like that he told you your cysts aren't big enough to cause concern.  We all know and you can read here that the size doesn't matter.

Did you postpone your wedding?

Take care,
Lori

Thanks Lori,
I did pospone my wedding.  I am so defeated right now.  I really am going to consider going to a new doctor.  He did not suggest anything.  he says the only reason why he is considering the surgery is because I  "say" that I am in pain.  It truly feels like a fight, when my doctor should be on my side, and he is not.

I can understand your frustration.  I am so sorry you had to postpone your wedding but I really think you need to go to a new dr.  Have you had a CT.  Perhaps you will get approved to get one in an all new setting since the MRI was really messed up.  I was able to get both an US, MRI and CT prior to my surgery and I have an HMO.  Since you are in pain, I would pursue this until you find answers.  So sorry you are having all of this trouble at this important time in your life.  It really stinks!  Hang in there!

My heart aches reading your post!!! I have gone through, well still going through what you did! I see that this all happened to you two years ago & I was wondering what ever came of it all? When I was a teenager I had a right oopherectomy(?), due to a 5 in dehrmoid(?again) tumor.  I was fortunate to go without too many problems other than clusters of small cysts on my left ovary for years & even have two beautiful boys now!! Over the last few months I have been in severe pain, in my abdomen & lower back. It comes with fatigue, migraines and dizziness.  I had a pelvis US done showing nothing, a MRI of my brain showing nothing, finally a renal ultrasound showing a 3cm cyst on my right kidney!  I felt like I was on the right track & things were adding up, then during the ct to confirm ultrasound that also showed a 3.5 cm "possible" ovarian cyst on my left ovary. Yet this too will be another thing that is of no significance from a medical perspective.
I, like you did, will start feeling a bit better, then I start trying to do everyday things, but being on my feet walking or even standing to long knocks me back out!!! I am on my second leave of absence from work, which is a battle financially!! Nobody wants to believe a person can't work if they don't have a diagnosis & my dr is no help, I have had to fight for every test they done, why would I want answers if I'm faking??? I made them test my urine which was pos for blood, which resulted in the Renal US, & so on.
I'm at my wits end, I'm sick of being told it's anxiety or depression, btw, who wouldn't be depressed or anxious when they feel like no one wants to help?!? I wasn't before all the pain!
I would greatly appreciate any updates you have on your situation, if not for hope for my own, than for advice on what to do next.
