Mass and Ultrasound

I had a CT scan the other day looking for ulcers. (I've had abdominal pain, bowel changes, etc) They found uclers but also said there was a questionable problem with ovaries. They found a cyst on the right ovary and a mass on the left. Why would they use two different wordings for a cyst, i.e. mass? I am scheduled for ultrasound tomorrow. What I wanted to know is can a transvaginal ultrasound be done during a period? Also, since they used the word mass does that indicate something more serious? Needless to say, I am confused as to what is going on. I have had irregular periods for quite awhile ( I thought nothing of it, I am 43 years old and thought menopause is probably right around the corner) I am tired a lot, but I am also a wife and mother and work. Will I know the results right away. Thank you, in advance. As you can tell many things are going through my mind.

a cyst is fairly normal on the ovary, we develop them monthly, most go away and are absorbed, a mass means there is a substantial image and it is good that you are having the TVS. depends on the radiologist and how soon he contacts your doctor about the readings.  Usually they do not do the scans during a period  but it can be done. 98% of all cysts, masses and tumors are benign. You might ask for the CA125 blood test also, it is not the most accurate test but it might show if you are spilling the protein,  since you are having these problems it is best to rule out cancer and get to the cause of your pain.  Good Luck and keep us posted.
