Missed Periods followed by an irregular pap smear

My 25 year old daughter has only had light spotting on her last two periods. She was given 2 pregnancy tests that showed up negative. They then did a biopsy that has shown abnormal cells. We are waiting to get the recommendation for her next procedure. How are these two related and is this something serious. She is very worried. I had cancer-in-situ at her age, can this also be related?
