My left ovary is larger than my uterus...any advice...HELP!!

The doctor says because of an endometrioma in my left ovary, it is larger than my uterus.  I have a 4cm fibroid on the front of my uterus and another, same size, on the back.  I also have a couple of small ones throughout.  He recommends that I have my ovary plus tube removed and several other myomectomies. I AM SO SCARED!  I'm 31 years old...why is this happening to me??  Can this cyst rupture?  Any advice on the surgery?  Has endometriosis been linked to ovarian cancer?  Any words of encouragement will help, my spirit is very low!  Thanks.

That was definitely a concern of mine, I'd like to have more children.  The doctor suggested the same thing, get pregnant immediately after procedure.  My surgery is scheduled for 11/21, keep me in your thoughts and prayers.  During my diagnostic test I cried on the operating table :(

I was trying to get pregnant for over 2 years, when I found out I had endo. The doctor told me it was probably endo, I said what can be done about it. He said scopic surgery. I said lets do it. I never even had a period after surgery. I was pregnant. I now have two beautiful girls one will be 5 in Dec. The other is 3 years old. I believe being pregnant so soon after surgery cured the endo from returning for awhile. That was April 2001 just had another scopic surgery in April 2006. No sign of endo. I'm just hoping it doesn't return. It was very painful. I haven't had an ovary removed but from what I understand the other one kicks in. Alot of women have had children with only one ovary. I just want to let you know it is possible to have children after endo.

I know it's easy to say but try not to worry too much, Yes Endometriomas can rupture but believe me you would know about it if it did happen because the pain is agony. Also the ovaries are tough little so and so's, both of mine have just been dissected for the second time this year for the same problem. I would definately ask your gyne if the removal is necessary because I know some gyne's aren't experienced enough to remove endometrioma's without spilling the contents.

Hi, the endo won't show up on scans, unless it becomes endometriomas then it can be seen, but not diagnosed.  Because of this, they say the ONLY way to diagnose it is with laporoscopy which you had.  So rest assured, no one probably missed anything with the scans and they diagnosed it the right way.  Hope this helps.  I had the surgery, and its not so bad.  You might even feel better after the surgery then you did before, many ladies say that!  Take care, Merytre

That's hard to say, I don't have Endo and am hoping you hear from those who do.  They would know that answer.  I have a young sister in law who was just diagnosed with Endo and has no kids yet, that stinks!  Now that you bring it up, I really have to ask her how it was diagnosed, too often it is by guess and by golly!  The lap makes yours conclusive, not a guess.  Better to know what you are dealing with.  So make certain your GYN knows that fertility is a priority with you.  One ovary can do the job but I'd want to know what measures, post LSO (left ovary removal) you can take toward that end.  MV

RavenLady,

Yes the doctor is suggesting a laparatomy and a myomectomy. Most people I have spoke to say the same thing about the fertility issue.  I guess it's just nerve wrecking knowing all this going on inside of me!! Thanks for sharing your personal experience.  It helps having someone to talk to. One last thing..do you think the previous ultrasounds could have missed all this or is it new?

Thank you for reading my question!

Five months ago I went to my primary complaining about left pelvic pain, she ordered an ultrasound which then turned into three different ultrasounds (pelvic, vaginal, and something with some dye at a later date).  They found a 2cm fibroid on the right side.  I continued having pain so I went to an ob/gyn.  He performed a laparascopy.  He said I had an endometrioma in my left ovary, lots of scar tissue, anterior and posterior uterine fibroids both 4cm, other small fibroids were noted, and endometriosis was in other areas.  This was all new to me.  The 2cm fibroid was the only reported on the ultrasound.  I have one child. I've had one abdominal surgery, umbilical hernia repair summer 05.  I don't understand why none of this showed up on the ultrasounds.  I'm scared because I want kids in the future.  If all of this developed this fast should I be concerned?  (the ultrasounds were taken in June)Again, any advice is welcomed.  THANK YOU!!

Welcome,
So tell us a little more like have you been diagnosed with endo and fibroids in the past?  Is the Dr. an OB/GYN?  What imaging tests such as ultrasound or CatScan have you had.  Do you have kids?  Any pregnancy issues?  Sorry for all the questions when what you are really looking for is answers, tell us a bit more and those will follow.  Scared is normal but that doesn't make it any less scary, been there!  MV

Brandi,
Given that info, I'd say get it over with!  Remember what I said about fertility, this does not necessarily preclude more little ones!  So is the Doctor talking laparotomy this time?  Guessing so since you already have experience with the much less intrusive laproscopy.  If it can be done that way, the recovery should not be much different.  I had the left ovary removed via laparotomy last November and for that I know from experience it is a minimum of 6 weeks due to the fatigue.  MV

I've spoken to two other nurse practioners who specialize in Women Health.  They both pretty much agree with the doctor.  The endometriosis is inside of my left ovary.  So basically it seems like my left ovary is the cyst.  I saw the pictures compared to a normal ovary, and they weren't pretty.  I ask the doctor about saving the ovary and he said the endometriosis had most likely deteriorated most of the tissue on the left ovary.  I think I am so nervous I'm becoming obsessive!  With what I've said how soon would you suggest scheduling surgery.  Any idea how long the recovery period would be.  I have options regarding the fibroids but the outcome of the endometrioma is pretty slim!

Hey Lady,
It sounds like the diagnosis has been fairly thourough.  So the Doctor recommended removal of the left ovary due to the endo cyst.  Hmm tough one.  Keep in mind should you shoose that option that fertility only reduces by about ten percent when you have an ovary removed.  The remaining ovary takes over.  However, since Endo is the "gift that keeps on giving" I don't blame you for being perplexed!  I guess I would start a question list for the Doctor and find out things such as other options like removing the cyst and leaving the ovary, that depends on the cyst, of course, but how can you opt for surgery unless you know of other options?  Did you get any?  MV
