New to forum...ovarian complex cyst..need help

Hello, Its great to find this forum.
I have a question about cysts in general. I have a complex cyst on my right ovary that appears to have been there for about 2 years. My OB-GYn isnt sure what kind of cyst it is (endometrial, dermoid etc.) this is all new to me, she ran a CS-125 which was normal. Now she gave me the choice of waiting and watching it, or going in laparoscopically and check it out, drain it, biopsy it etc. I have the lapsroscopy scheduled for a month from now. is this a good idea? I am 31 and want children. I have no pain or symptoms, just a few irregular periods about 8 months ago, nothing since. Ultrasound showed it was 5 cm, and shrinking, but only a tiny bit. I dont want them to have to make a big cut, or remove my ovary. Is it true if its dermoid or endometrial it can ruin my ovary? Thank you in advance. Any ideas??

I am 52 and postmenopausal for 3 years now.  Two years ago I had a D&C because my uterus wall was too thick, thank goodness it didn't show anything at that time.  Now we are two years later and they found a cyst (very small) on my right ovary and also my uterus lining abnormal -- that doctor said I'll need a D&C.  However, she did a endometrial biospy in the office and it came back with hyperplasia.  I have a pre-op meeting with my doctor on Wednesday.  I am nervous that the cyst and thickening of the uterus can be related?  Has anyone else experienced this.  Thanks, Concerned

Need some opions... had ultrasound found 10x9cm what appears to be according to the US a complex cyst with peripheral septations. Went to have CT Scan and results show thin walled cystic pelvic mass at 9.9x9.2cm presumably cystic neoplasm of the ovary. no ascites or adenopathy to suggest metastatic disease. CA-125 came back great..have lower abdominal buldge with discomfort when eat of drink anything.. I look like I am 5 mo pregant but that is impossible.. am 46 had partial hysterectomy 4 years ago. general good health except sudden weight again of almost 15 pds in 6-8 weeks. thats what got me into the dr. ... doctor told me today wants me to see ob/onocologist for consult... what are the chance that a complex cyst is cancerous??

i have some personal experience on this subject.  i had what was thought to be a large complex cyst removed along with my left ovary last year.  it turned out to be a cluster of simple cysts.  in addition to that surgery i opted to have my bladder and rectocele fixed.  this was done bothe vaginally and through a laperotomy.  the cyst and ovary were too big to remove with a laperoscopy.  i now have a simple and a complex cyst on my right ovary.  ive had 2 ultra-sounds 4 months apart.  no change in size with the complex and the simple one shrunk a little bit.  i am following up again in another 4 months and then i will decide if i want it out or play the wait and see game.  i asked that the ovary be removed during my last surgery but my doctor didnt want me to go into menopause.  this is happening anyway.  i am 47 so i dont need to worry about expanding my family.  however, i did take a ton of fertility drugs 15 yrs ago trying to get pregnant.  i think that is part of the problem today.  too much ovarian stimulation.  as far as a laperoscopy....its a walk in the park.  you should be home the same day.  just a little tender for a couple of days.  good luck.

I understand your concern.  I had a complex cyst that went away after 2 cycles and I had another cyst removed on the other ovary that was a corpus luteum cyst.  I didn't want to wait but it turned out it did go away before the lararoscopy happened. I also had a big cervical polyp removed at the same time.  The laparoscopy is a breeze in as much as the cuts are only about a half an inch long and will not be noticeable after healing.  They should not remove your ovary unless the cyst is wrapped around it in a complicated way.  How do you know you have had your cyst for 2 years?  My advice would be to get one more US before the surgery to see if it is shrinking cause if it is then you save yourself the hassle of the surgery.  If you aren't in pain or having bad irregualr bleeding and the CA 125 is normal then definitely check on it one more time before your surgery.  With all that I know now that is exactly what I would do.

Thank you both very much. I think I will go ahead and have it removed. Its been there for a long time, and I want to have children. Hope I do okay. Is the laparoscopy painful? I dont like the thought of them cutting m open, will my belly button be all scared up?

As someone who's never had surgery in their life, that also scares me. I don't even have stretch marks from my pregnancies, and also the thought of being put out then cut up terrifies me, I know they can't do anything without permission but I'm just paranoid. I guess I want to know the same thing you do =)

It's not for sure yet that they're taking it out. At this time it's a "probably" because it's been there for so long and not shrinking. It's not growing either so that's a good thing. After my MRI on monday the decision will be made as to whether to operate or not, I'm leaning towards doing it because my cyst is causing pain and discomfort and i really don't want it there anymore. If MRI shows it to have shrunk I may just give a more wait and see approach.

You sound like me, I've had a complex cyst that's been there i know for at least 6 months I've felt it under my skin before that, so no clue how long its been there (at least a year and a half is my guess). Had to fight with my doctor and insist on an u/s to get one (i've changed doctors now), never gave me a CA-125 but from what i've read that is pretty much useless in determining if you have cancer or not. Mine is about 4.5ish cm, going for an MRI monday then probably going to schedule surgery. I'm 25 and already have 3 kids so I'm not going to freak if my fertility is affected though my left ovary is still perfect. As long as I still have 1 good ovary I think I'm going to play it on the safe side and go ahead and remove the cyst at the risk of my right ovary, since there's really no way to tell if it's cancer unless it's removed and biopsied.

If you wait and watch, you could go on high dose birth control pills and see if it shrinks.  I think if it were me, I'd want it out but would want one more transvaginal ultrasound before the surgery, if possible, to see if it is still there.  I don't want to give you wrong info about the type of cysts and if they could ruin your ovary so maybe you could go to google.com and type those names in and see what is said.  They probably wouldn't have to remove the whole ovary but keep in mind that you have another one when needed if you ever had to have one removed.  Keep us posted.
