Ovarian Cancer and Ileostomy

by SALassie, Apr 10, 2009 08:29AM
I found out that I had stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. At 69 years of age, I had never been ill, on no medication and only in the hospital to have two babies.  In December I went in for a Hysterectomy and awoke from surgery with an Ileostomy.  At that moment, it was unbearable and thought that I would never get through it.  But with time it has gotten better and now it is an inconvenience, but not a trauma.  I am half way through my Chemo and upon completion of that, prayerfully the Ileostomy will be reversed.  I am having a problem with DEHYDRATION even though I make a point of drinking 8-12 cups of liquid a day.  The doctor has now suggested that I go in for liquid IV 2 or 3 times a week. How common is an Ileostomy along with Ovarian Cancer???

Lassie....you are one brave and strong lady!  I can hear  strength in your voice.  I didn't have the same issues you have but I know there are a few others here who have.  Hopefully they will come along soon.  Sounds like your chemo is on track and you are doing well overall.   I am not aware of anyone having such diffiulties staying hydrated, however.
You are one tough lady , and an example for the rest of us.  The IV might be a hastle but , no doubt, it would keep you healthier and probably cause you to  even feel better.  This disease is a tough one, but it appears it has met it's match in you!
Peace.

When I was on chemo the first time I had a hard time keeping hydrated too.  I found that I had to drink water or cranberry juice several times through the night or I would be so dehydrated.  Once I did have to go in for hydration and some magnesium between chemos, but that was before I started drinking all night long.  You have been through so much, but you seem to have a fighting spirit. I wish you the best and hope you will stick around the forum for support and friendship.  Marie
