Ovarian Cyst

Hi .I am 27 years old and have 20cm ovarian cyst .I do not have any children at the moment.Gynacologist has advised me to undergo a surgery and remove left ovary to treat the cyst. Is there any way by which i can save my ovary .Also can a 20 cm cyst be treated without a surgery by keyhole tratement of laproscopy .I am very tensed. Please advise.

Hello there....your best chance of saving your ovary is to have your surgery done by a gyn/oncologist....not because it is cancer but because this is their area of expertise....YOU HAVE ONLY ONE CHANCE TO GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME....you have your whole life ahead of you kiddo....do yourself a favor and get the right surgeon.
Peace.

Just an after thought...many, many babies are born to moms who have only one ovary so take that off ylur worry plate...

Do they feel that the cyst is benign?  My sister also has a large tumor/cyst on her ovary.  Her doctor (a gyne/oncologist) said that a laproscope was not possible because of the possibility of rupturing the cyst.  She will have surgery on Wednesday.

A 20cm cyst is really quite large. It may not be possible to do it by laproscopy because of the size. Whether or not to save the ovary is going to depend on what the gyn finds in there; whether or not the cyst is seperate from the ovary (ie, like a boil that you can break and clean, but there's clean tissue underneath) or whether it involves the ovary (ie. like a pimple that goes into the skin layers). If it's 20cm, then it likely involves the ovary.
But not to worry about children after surgery... The remaining ovary completely takes over all hormone and egg production, and everything runs just like you had both. There are several women on the site that have had children after having an ovary removed. Hopefully one of them will pop in to add reassurance.
Hang in there, and keep us posted on what's going on.... We're here to support you!

Hi

A big Thank you to wubbie3, Dayzee207 , and dian07  for your kind words and reassurance. I feel less tensed now.

I have been referred to a  doctor who is an Obsterician(primary speciality) with Gyn(secondary speaciality) .Is that alright ?

Dayzee207 can you please keep me posted as to how your sisters operation went ahead and did doctor manage to save her ovary .I believe my cyst is benign.

Can they not drain the cyst during surgery and make it smaller  and then remove it from ovary. That way can they save my ovary as i heard it is easier to save ovary when cyst is small.

I am mentally prepared for a surgery now but still worried about ovary.

Hi

Can you tell me whether to go in for vertical cut or horizontal cut for 20 cm cyst .

hi i doubt very much they will drain the cyst ,the surgeon tries to avoid any spillage because that causes further complications. it is likely that they will do a vertical cut with a cyst of 20 cms and they may have to remove the ovary. i had a cyst the size of a grapefruit removed with my ovary 18 years ago,i was pregnant at the time and had a normal birth at 37 weeks. i had twin girls 2 years later, again normal births i conceived at the first attempt!i feel very blessed. i have had another dermoid cyst removed 5 days ago it went well ,the cyst was 5 cms this time and i kept the left ovary. hopefully thats the end of it all now!all the best, please dont worry waiting for the operation is definately the worst part.
