Ovarian Cysts

HELP! I am a 43 and my menstrual cycle is 12 days late, my breasts hurt real bad, and have pain in my right side. Went to the doctor and he did an ultrasound in his office - he located a cyst on my right ovary with a white ring around it. He told me to follow up with him in 4-6 weeks.
My question is why is my period so late and two what is the white ring around the cyst. He said it almost looked like an embryo and had me take a urine pregnancy test that was negative.
