Ovarian Mass 2.5 cm

Ovarian Mass 2.5 cm

Dr.,
I have been in pain for almost 2 years. I get so stiff I can not even stand up straight without lots of pain, I stay bloated, have gas, pain in back, side and pelvic area, also pain down my leg. I can't pick anything up, bend,  or sneeze without terrible pain. Everytime I go to the doctor or hospital they find blood in urine and high white blood cell count and high heart rate and they tell me it is urinary infections and send me on my way. The problem is the antibiotics do not take the problem away and I believe I was getting misdiagnosed. I had a CT scan done 2 years ago that showed nothing. I had a MRI done that showed slipped disc in my back and have been through physical therapy and chiroprator, but still no change in pain. I just had a transvaginal ultrasound that found a 2.5 cm mass on my right ovary(all of my pain is left side). My doctor sent the results to an OBGYN that said nothing to worry about  and to make appointment in 6 weeks. My question is could this mass be causing all of my pain, should I get a second oppinion, and what should I do? I'm really tired of going to dr.'s, test, and hurting constantly and I know everyone around me is tired of hearing me complain. Please help any advice will be appreciated.

Hello,
I don't know for sure, however your symptoms are extremely similar to mine.  For several years I had lower back pain with pain down my left leg especially, also pain in abdomen/pelvis.  I also started having some changes in the days between my periods (sometimes 14 days, sometimes 26, sometimes up to 32).  I had gas and heartburn. I also had a slipped disc, then radiological evidence of degenerative disc disease. Then one day when I was leaning over, I had chest pain and dizziness.  My MD sent me to a cardiologist who did a full work-up for cardiac disease (I'm in my forties), but found no evidence of that.  My primary MD felt that 1) I probably had gall-bladder issues (all tests were negative), and 2) I was obese therefore these symptoms were probably because of my obesity.  I also wrote it off as obesity.
Eleven months ago I felt a mass in my pelvis just under my belly button.  My doc didn't feel it, but sent me to have a CT scan of my abd/pelvis just for safety.  There was a huge mid-pelvis mass on the scan (off my right ovary) that my doc said needed to be removed whether it was benign or malignant.  Subsequently I had surgery to remove the mass. It was the size of two tennis balls.  It was a benign mucoid cyst caused by poly-cystic ovary disease (something I was not aware I had). At the time my doctor removed 1/2 of my right ovary with the cyst (I had told him I would like to keep an ovary if possible), he decided to remove my left ovary in its entirety to biopsy (he said he didn't know why, that everything looked benign).  The biopsy came back positive for adenocarcinoma (ovarian cancer) and I went back to surgery to remove everything (the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the omentum (the layer of fat aound the pelvic organs) as well as lymph nodes for further biopsies.  My uterus also tested positive for endometrial cancer.
I don't mean to depress you, however it is my advice, as a cancer survivor, that you have an abdomino-pelvic CT scan done again, or consider another trans-vaginal ultrasound (it has been 2 years).  Discuss these with your doctor, preferably one that takes your concerns seriously and doesn't brush you off.  Both ovarian and uterine cancer (as well as many other problems, e.g. polycystic ovaries) have back pain and abdominal/pelvic pain as a symptom.  My cancer was found very early because I stood up for myself and questioned my doctor again and again, and because God (or whomever/whatever you believe in) intervened and had my surgeon remove a perfectly normal looking ovary that showed NO mass on CT scan or by visual assessment.
