Ovarian cancer linked to red meat eaters

Right - a rather bizarre question, but I remember when I orginally launched myself into researching everything Ovarian Cancer before I was actually diagnosed with it, I came across an article that linked Ovarian Cancer with people who included a lot of red meat in their diet (inconclusive results) - anyone heard or know anything about this?  Right now I wish I was a veggie but I love a good steak!

You know, over the years we have been told so many things and then the research proves it to be untrue...heck, when I was pregnant with my 7th child we were not supposed to eat eggs, red meat or cook on a grill....there were many other warnings as well...it is a wonder any of our children are normal..my in laws are both in their 80's...she continues baking with lard, eating fried foods, only real butter.... cream on their morning cereals...eggs and bacon regularly....why are they still alive?  He farms full time...she is all over the place playing cards, mowing and garadening (her garden gets bigger every year...talk of the county for her sticky cinnamon rolls....I guess they can link red meat as a danger to us all....personally I think our sedentary life styles are a huge part of our problems....I enjoy a good steak just as you do...seafood is great...and I enjoy salads (if I can put cheese, olives, eggs and some good meat in it)....I think variety is the secret to enjoyment and moderation helps too.
Now I want a steak...don't have any...I know...I'll grill chicken breasts wrapped in bacon...yummy!
Peace.

Maybe its my family history but working in health care for 30 years has given me a rather jaded opinion of all the so called "risks" to our health.  If you are going to get something it will happen at some point in your life.  A lot of seniors see this happening.  I believe being on top of your own health and having timely tests and checks help head off a lot of problems or at least get them in time to treat them.  Example, my dad had symptons of prostrate problems for months before he would admit to it.  It was finally picked up on the day after Christmas one year when I drove him into emerg because he hadn't peed in two days.  He could barely stand up.  They thought they got it all at first but a couple of years later he had met's.  He live about 3 more years at that point but if he had gone earlier chances are he would have lived out his normal life span.  My mom developed the "flesh eating " disease when she was in a nursing home.  It sounds terrible but it got into her blood stream and she went septic.  She was 82 and was not in pain.  She came around long enough to ask my sister( I was still on the road heading to the hospital 5 hours away) if it was ok if she went.  My sister told we would rather she didn't but if she had to she could go.  She went to sleep and passed away 2 hours later.  Fast and painless.  So who knows what life holds for us.  Enjoy life when we can.

You know what... I feel that if your going to get cancer, then that's just the way it is. I totally think that keeping yourself in good health is the key to living longer, but even vegetarian organics get cancer! I don't think I got cancer because I ate too much red meat, or not enough tomatoes and broccoli - I don't think it's because of the cleaning products I use, or the fact that I love sugar in my coffee every morning. It's just the way my life was supposed to go. I have tried really hard to never ask why me, because the answer really is, why not me? I think everyday we will read something in the media that tells us how we should be living our lives - I guess it's all how much we want to believe it. On a positive note, if one in every three people will get cancer in thier life, I can now hold that over my 2 older sisters heads as collateral!

I have been a vegetarian (I eat chicken/turkey occasionally, maybe 2-3 times a year) for 15 years and I still got OvCa full blast.

Also, I am fairly athletic and quite active, get lots of cardio exercise on top of walking 2 hours a day, eat healthy, and still have high cholesterol.

I will continue my lifestyle because I feel good with it but not because it keeps cancer at bay...because it doesn't.

I shall add that I eat lots of fiber and drink 3 liters of water a day but I am still am struggling with constipation.

Sometimes I want to start smoking, drinking coffee and alcohol, and eating red meat, maybe that will cure all my ailments because something is kinda wrong here...

I enjoy my red meat, processed foods, sugar in my coffee, and all the sugary, fat laden foods one could handle. I enjoy my lifestyle. My daughter and I found organic bananas. Paid a pretty penny got home, and they were disqusting. They sat and turned into banana bread bananas and even that wasnt good. Another time my son and I got organic cereal. I could not eat it, it looked too much like rabbit turds. By all accounts I should be diabetic. Im not. My mom got septic @ the age of 32 due to TSS she is a double amputee with short term memory loss. She was vegan. Didnt drink or smoke. I am aware of all the risks of my diet, cigarettes, and laid back lifestyle. I too worked in healthcare for years. I have 2 beautiful 19 month old babies thanks to Clomid. I knew the percieved risks of that too but they are worth it. I truly believe life is to enjoy and not spend every minute worrying about what may or may not happen. Sorry for the rambling. Erika

It is refreshing to read everyone's take on lifestyle.  I decided to change my diet after recovering from the chemotherapy and  avoid processed foods, sugar and the "white foods"; all this on the advice of a nutritionist.  While I think her recommendations were essentially good, I found that I couldn't stick with her plan.  I also wasn't able to gain back any of the 30lbs that I lost.  Now I allow myself to eat the rich desserts and have that glass of wine with dinner.  Honestly, I don't know how much time I have left and I certainly don't want to spend the rest of my days living without the foods that I love.  Life is meant to be enjoyed.  And I've put on 15lbs!

I love the story of the 100 year old man who was being interviewed on his long life.  The interviewer asked him, "If you were to live your life again what would you do differently?"  The man paused and then said, "I would eat more bacon."  Me too :)

I know of someone who was 96 and in such good health that his doctor asked him what his secret was, and he said pork and ice cream.

I eat what is considered a healthy diet because I really do enjoy these foods, always have. My big weakness is chocolate but I try not to beat myself up over it.

Has anyone looked into the macrobiotic diet? Now THAT's a desperate diet. I've heard some people had success with it at the same time people I know are on it look horrible. Probably because it contains no comfort foods at all.
