Ovarian mixed mullerian tumour

Hi,
Hope you can help. My mum (73 years old) was dx in May 2006 with ovarian mixed mullerian tumour. It was 5 inches long and had spread into the uterus and onto part of the bowel. She had a total hysterectomy and part of her bowel removed followed by 6 cycles of chemo (3 different types but not sure what they were). She has just been diagnosed with a recurrence, the Dr calls it a large pelvic tumour. She is currently in hospital as she is anaemic, has an electrolyte imbalance and large leg swelling, all of which they are treating. She is having stents inserted as the tumour is affecting her kidney function and her ability to urinate. She is underweight, weak and understandably depressed. The Dr says that the tumour is incurable but has offered radiotherapy to shrink it should my Mums strength return. Are there any other options for her. She has been through so much it's cruel.
Best wishes.

Dear MS Hashi,

I am so very sorry to hear about your Mum. It is cruel ,isn't it/ The terrible things that people go through!

An ovarian MMT (malignant mixed mullerian tumor or triple MT) is a very aggressive malignancy. The cells come from the female reproductive tract. More than one kind of cancerous cell is seen, Some pathologist will call these tumors 'sarcomas' which are malignant tumors from muscle tissue. Other pathologist will just say these tumors came from the glandular cells of the ovary or uterus but became so aggressive and malignant that they look like sarcomas.

It is very frightening to develop a recurrence within a year. If the recurrence is isolated - that is : the only sign of tumor is in the pelvis, surgery can sometimes be useful . Radiation can also be helpful.

Chemotherapy such as taxol or carboplatin as a single agent can shrink the tumor.

I imagine that you and she feel like you do not have time to catch your breath. She can become sick very quickly. It does sound like she is getting excellent care with stents to keep her from getting kidney failure, transfusions and so forth.

These tumors are incurable. It is very unfair. it would be good to have a clear discussion with your mother's doctor about your mother's wishes should she become more ill. In the United States, patients will designate a family member or friend as a 'health care proxy' to help make decisions if they should become too ill to be able to communicate.
best wishes to you
