PLease help

Hi,
My mom is 66 years old and had a very large tumor in her pelvis, she had a complete hysterectomy and did very well!  pathology report showed clear cell carcinoma, it was all enclosed within the tumor.  She has had Ct and Pet scans which were entirely normal.  Beacuse the the type of cell they found the oncologist want her to have chemotherapy for preventative reasons.  They are suggesting carboplatin and taxol for 6 sessions every 3 weeks.   They say if she doesn't have chemo it is very likely for this type of cancer to come back and it would be too late for chemo, that it would be palative care since ct and pet scan don't always pick this up.  We got 2 opinions and both doctors said the same thing.  My mom doesn't want to go along with this, she says she feels great and she shouldn't be putting poisons in her body since she doesn't have cancer.  Doctors say she will be sick with the treatment and will lose her hair and she is very afraid.  I have explained everything to her since Spanish is her primary language.  I have offered to take to a spanish speaking oncologist but she brushed everything I say aside.   I don't know what to do or how to handle the situation.
Please give me your advise, what can I do to help my mom?

Being afraid is very normal, do you know any one close to your Mother that has had chemo?  If so maybe talking with them would help.  Ask her to do this for you because you want her to live a long time free of cancer and this is the best chance she has of doing it. No one wants to do the chemo route, but it is all we have to help us live. Hair will grow back, the effects of the chemo usually disappear  in a week after each infusion.  Tell her that 1 cell left in her, will be 2 cells tomorrow and 4 the next and so forth, this is the best chance she has, and she should trust what the doctors tell her .  Most of the ladies on here were not offered a choice,  they were discovered too late to avoid chemo. My daughters doctor thought he got it all also, but she recurred, to his surprise, and is still taking chemo 18 months later.  Good Luck , I can hear your pain over this.

does a person go back to being "normal" after chemo?  My mom is afraid of having lasting side effects

My daughter is "back to normal"  back at her job now full time and feels great most of the time.   leslee is a few years younger than your Mother , but if she is active and is in good physical health, she should return to feeling good again.  Without the chemo, what is she looking at?  does she want to possibly face a future of a cancer riddled body with nothing to save her then?  Clear cell is very aggressive and like I said it only takes 1 loose cell.

Hi
What kind of after effects is your mum worried about ? when you have chemo your hair grows back when its finished , the tiredness subsides and your appetite returns to normal . Some people lose weight during chemo and some put it on but like simply star says 1 cancer cell is 2 tomorrow and they multiply . I was scared to have chemo but it wasn,t as bad as i thought it would be and i may not be here now if i hadn,t followed advice of my oncologist . I was told that the cancer was probarbly all removed during surgery but because of it being clear cell type i had to decide if i wanted chemo as an insurance policy , i decided to give myself the best chance i could . I hope you can persuade your mum to give herself the best chance too . Thinking of you , take care  Angie xx
