Pain after laparotomy

Hi well i am 23 and had a laparotomy on thursday so im 4 days after surgery now i had a 10cm cyst and my right ovary removed. I havent had any results from any biopsy's yet my dotor has said to concentrate on getting better till we know the results.

My question is what kind of pain comes after the laparotomy im in quite a lot of pain i would say my pain score is a good 6 after all pain medication i can have this evening. It feels like stretching and tightness from the wound where there is 15 staples, also im finding it hard to stand up straight and walk around and generaly uncomfy. My stomach looks very swollen is this normal? and i also feel bloated? I mean i know there is obviously going to be pain 4 days after major surgery i was just wondering how long it generally gets before it gets better and are able to get around a little better?

The nurse who comes to the house every day says it looks like its healing well but it feels very tight.

Anyway any advice would be appreciated. Thanks claire x

day 13 and i have to enema and take milk of mag. every day (i never took them before in my life till this surgery) it feels as though my pain is like the 1st day if i don't and my belly extends way out. i also got a urinary infection after surgery that they gave me three days of antibiotics for and my urine still smells so i think it is still there. I gotta call dr.'s office tommorow. Anyone have the terrible constipation this late in the game???? ?????    when i do go from all the laxatives it's like soup!

It's been six months since my laperotomy and had my left ovary and tube removed along with a 9 inch chocolate cyst.  I have been experiencing pain on my LEFT side (where everything was removed - so there should be no pain there) and was told it may be scar tissue.  Does anyone know anything about it?

Don't let that pain get ahead of you agin!  That's the trick, to stay ahead with the meds.  Have you had a movement yet?  That's a milestone too.  MV

Trust me hun a dull aching pain or even a stabbing pain is nothing. A laparotomy is a huge surgery you will have all manor of aches and pains if you went to the doc for each one you might as well move your bed in. I went to my surgery 7 months after the op complaing of really bad pain by my scar. He checked for hernia and after eliminating that he said it would take a year for me to heal fully so give it a chance. LOL you are only on day 5 bloody hell !!

Totally normal!

After 10 months I still get funny hard to describe things in my abdomin and the scar still feels tight. You have had major surgery things are going to be all over the place for a long time, if your doing stairs and baths you are doing fabulous

Hi well thank you both for the relpys i guess i just dont know how much pain is right but it sounds about right reading this forum, i have been given paracetamol, codeine and voltraol to take home with me problem is yesterday i stupidly decided i wasnt taking any pain medication unless i really had to ( i dont like taking tablets) so i got to 8pm and was in pain and took some but they ddint work as well becasue they should have been in my system all day. The nurse told me i should be kind to myself its only day 5 today and i should take the pain medication.

When i woke this morning i thought i was going to be in loads of pain but when i got up it was a little easier than yesterday and i can get around the house up and down the stairs and in and out of the bath so i suppose im doing ok.

The pain feels like aching but worse and uncomfy also bloated and full tummy if that makes any sence its hard to describe how it feels.

The nurse has just come out and said it looks like its healing really well and the pain sounds normal and to be kind to myself with the pain relief.

Hi Claire and Welcome to the Recovery Side!
I had an ovary and a couple of "aliens" removed in 05 and had a horrid "rotton tooth" ache where the ovary was remove.  That sometimes happens when things are removed, the dead end nerves go a little nuts.  Not Fun!  My surgeon only gave me three days worth of percocet that left me, like you, at about a six.  When I ran out I was prescribed vicadin over the phone.  Didn't tougch it, bad pain!  Had a very uncomfortable ride to the clinic just to get a decent amount of percocet!  Not Fun!  So how much pain med did you get sent home with Claire?  It will get better but have to stay prepared.  MV

I'm two weeks out of my surgery and nearly pain free now, but I know exactly what you are talking about.  I couldn't stand up straight till just a couple days ago and I walked around for the first week and a half with my arms crossed over my belly (almost like I was afraid it would all fall out unless I held it in). There is some stretching feeling, and that is normal. The one thing I wasn't expecting, that may be your concern as well, is that there are also stiches on the inside (disolvable) from where the surgeon sewed up the insides (muscles, I think). The staples are only for the skin on the outside.  At the top and bottom of my incision (just above my belly button and just above my pubic hairline) are two knots on the inside. They feel like hard balls under the surface of the skin. That, according to my doc, is where he tied off and knotted whatever he sewed up inside. That knot, when stretched by standing up straight, hurts like all get-out and feels like a burning pain. If that's what you are talking about, then the good news is, it gets better. I can still feel the knots but they hurt less each day and I can stand up straight now.  I stopped needing pain meds about 3 days ago and will be driving for the first time tomorrow.  I did rent a wheelchair for long walks (like through the ball park to see my son play), but I can get around completely on my own and upright.  If you are not doing anywhere near this well by the two week mark, then you really should talk to your doc.  He should be taking the staples out in the next few days and you can mention it to him then as well.  I did, but he told me the same thing everyone else did.... the insides take longer to heal than the outside. Just remember that your incision may look ok, but the inside isn't nearly as well healed yet. Give it some time.  Before long you'll probably be as antsy as I am now about getting back to my regular routine.

As far as the pathology goes, I got my results when I went in to have my staples removed. My surgery was on a Weds. morning, I was out of the hospital on Friday morning and I got my path report and staples out on Monday morning.  So, about six days in all.  I know it's hard to wait, but the girls here will tell you that 99% of ovarian cysts (mine was a mucinous cystadenoma... technically speaking, a tumor) are benign.

Wish you luck.
