Pelvic Ultrasound

by Shar820, Jun 11, 2009 09:50PM
I have most of the symptoms of ovarian cancer: vaginal bleeding, bloated and very hard abdomen, can't hardly eat, losing weight, fatigue. The symptoms have been going on for 3 weeks now and i called my gyno who had me do a pelvic ultrasound. My doctor said the ultrasound looked normal, and has referred me to a gastro intestinal doctor. My question is, how acurate is the ultrasound? My doctor has yet to see me in person, this has all been done on the phone. I have alot of cancer in my family, 2 being aunts on both sides with breast cancer, and i am concerned that something is being missed. My symptoms are getting worse, i keep losing weight, and i still have 3 weeks until i can get into the intestinal doctor. Should i get a second opionion?

You might be able to talk the gyne into a CA-125 test if you remind him (her?) that you have lots of cancer, including breast cancer, in the family.  I gather that neither the blood test or the ultra-sound are 100 percent accurate, but in a large study done in the UK recently they found that either test would pick up more than 75% of ovarian cancers.  So if you get both done, and both are clear, you'd have some peace of mind that you don't have cancer -- which is most likely the case.

Since the gyne sent you for an ultrasound, he/she is probably on the ball.  The gastro doctor is probably the "second opinion" you need.  Your gyne might be able to help you get in to see the gastro, too.  You might also research to find out if there are other gastro doctors, perhaps one that has openings sooner?

Don't quit until you get answers.  And good luck.

Hi there.  If it were me I would get another appointment to physically see the Doc so a better assessment can be made.  I would also ask to have a tranvaginal ultrasound since this is a more accurate test.  Don't stop until you get the answers.  Good luck!
