Please help....question about vaginal ultrasound

by dawn74, Jul 11, 2008 10:49AM
I had a transvaginal ultrasound done and my dr. is on vacation and the nurse gave me what the report said. I'm worrying myself sick not knowing the answers to these questions. The only details the nurse read to me from the ultrasound report was this: "Complex left ovarian mass vs. multiple contiguous cyst". My first question is, is there a difference between a mass and a cyst? Also, does the "vs." mean the radiologist wasn't sure if it was one or the other? Lastly, I've tried to look up information about multiple contiguous cyst and haven't found anything on this. What are your thoughts. Thank you.

Hi there.  Doctors will often use the terms mass, tumour, or cyst interchangeably.  All the same.  I would suspect that the vs. means they aren't sure.  My scans indicated one grapefruit sized simple cyst and after surgery was told multiple cysts that had bled together.  I can't answer you on the contiguous but do look at the health pages (top right) and there is some info on cysts.  Please do follow up with us on the ovarian cyst forum.  There are a lot of people with a lot of experience in this area who can help you.

Yes, agree with Trudie. I was scared to death when my Dr. kept using the term cyst and tumor in the same office visit after my TVUS!! When does your doctor return?

Cysts are very, very common in younger women, so please try not to worry and come see us on the Ovcy forum..
