Polycystic Ovaries

I have recently been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries. I do not miss my periods, or have erratic schedule. but recently the pain during the mensurial period was out of control and the ultra sounfd suggested polycystic ovaries. Is it true that it prevents ovary cancer? if do not miss my periods what is the effect of it and is acupenture a treatement?
(I am 23 yr old virgin, 5'4" and am a little over weight)

I also have an irregular menstrual cycle, however mine used to be regular for 11 years and about 4 months ago, its been very irregular. I get my period too soon, like twice a month, my acne is horrbile and the doctor is suspecting that i have polycysitc ovaries. Does anyone know how this disorder can be diagnosed?

I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome in March (a diagnosis that took many months and many doctors!)  It is not easy to diagnose, mostly because doctors do not know what to test.  You need your insulin level checked (because PCOS involves insulin resistance) and your Lutenizing Hormone to Follicle Stimulating Hormone ratio checked (should not be above 1:1).  You also might want your testosterone level checked (some women with PCOS have an elevated level while others do not).  Symptoms of PCOS include hair loss, excess hair in the "wrong" places, unexplainable weight gain, hot flashes, hypertension, high cholesterol, irregular/absent menses, acne, fatigue.  Hope this helps!
