Poor Bone Density results...

I had a bone density test done last week, and found out today that the results aren't so good. I guess they scanned my femur and my lower spine. My femur came back good (T score +1.2) but my spine came back bad (T score -2.2). My results say I have moderate osteopenia in the lumbar spine, which puts me at an increased risk for fracture. Being 28, I really wasn't expecting this, but now that I know, what can I do to help my back? I went out and bought soft calcium chews with vitamin D in them. I am supposed to take two a day, which would have me taking 1300mg total daily. Is this enough? My Oncologist didn't have any specific numbers for me, but said I should talk to my family doctor about it. What, if anything, do you take to support your bones?
Thanks in advance,
Becky
(p.s. the score to diagnose osteoperosis is T -2.5)

Hi Becky,
It really is awful how this chemo messes with our metabolism of everything. Interestingly enough our country is such high dairy consumers and we have one of the worst in osteoporosis. That whfoods.org website is excellent. Whenever I am low on something I go into my book. I just sent a copy of a page out of the book for my mother on calcium. She was just diagnosed with breast cancer with mets to the bones.

Your greens are the best. Load up on spinach, swiss chard and keep doing your supplements. Not only good for the bones but good for everything and anti-cancer. Collards have a high amount but not every one likes them. They are now realizing vitamin K is part of it all. Spinach has so many other things also. And also weight bearing exercise. I am a good walker but should be doing those weights. Stay physically active as much as you can.

Now if someone can encourage me to do weights!

Take care,
Helen

Becky,  Gotta love chemo! and the prednisone.  Weight bearing exercise, walking,  will help with the bones keeping their calcium.  I do circuit weights to help prevent bone loss, but walking, to me is the ideal exercise.  Just what you want to hear when you don't feel well enough to move.  How are you doing?  All my best,
Marie

Becky, my bone density scan showed that I was at moderate risk for osteoporosis which they attribute to the steroids that I'm taking.  I was started on Acetinol which is the drug that you take one day a week.  I agree with everyone's suggestions, try to stay active and get as much calcium from your diet (greens, etc) as you can.  I know how hard it is to be up and about when that's the last thing you want to do

Becky, exercise increases bone density. Also, vitamin C, especially ester C because it has bioflavinoids, increases the uptake of calcium. Since you are taking calcium supplements it would increase your body's absorption of it.

Hi Becky, Unhulled organic sesame seeds are great for osteoporosis and actually have a reversal effect.  They taste yummy too and are easy to consume - just sprinkle 1/2 a teaspoon on salads, or  any meals actually on a daily basis.
