Dear Doctor, I'm 50 years old and still having regular periods. Over the last several months I have had lower abdominal bloating, gas, and just recently, pain in my left hip. I mentioned this at my last gyn visit several weeks ago and a vaginal ultrasound was performed. There was fluid present (behind my uterus, I believe) and my endometrial stripe was darker than she would have liked. She had me return 7 days after my period to repeat the vag US and there was more fluid and the endometrial stripe was a little better. A CA-125 was drawn which was 51. Now my doctor says I need to have my uterus and ovaries removed. I should also mention that at my routine visit a bone density scan was done and I was found to be moderately osteopenic and just started monthly Boniva. I'm frightened. Should any further diagnostic studies be performed or does this seem like a sound plan? Should I see a gyn oncologist? Thank you for your advice.
