Pre surgery health

Any suggestions on building up the immune system prior to ovarian removal surgery.  I am 17 and due for surgery on May 23 at NYU.  I tend to be slightly anemic but am slim and active.  Any suggestions to help my body not get infected after surgery?  Thanks

The only thing I can offer is to stay as hydrated as possible.  I made the mistake of not getting enough fluids for the days before surgery because I was so nervous.  As a result, I had difficulty maintaining an adequate blood pressure and went through three iv bags before they would let me go home.

Dear Briarrose,

I, too, was very anemic, dehydrated, and generally, in poor physical condition before my surgery. In fact, they put off my surgery, for a bit, until I was strong enough. Florida citrus, as mentioned, is one vital addition you can make to your daily diet. You may, also, want to discudd with your doctor the adding of iron and other nutrients, in pill form, to speed up the process. A healthy, well-balanced diet is always preferred, but if not quite "making it", still, a super vitami nmay be your answer. Please consult your doctor.
Good luck with your surgery.

I agree with both of the previous posts.  I exercised faithfully before my surgeries (but not because of them.)  I bounced back after all of them; and I'm middle aged and overweight.  I did weights and cardio almost daily.  You'll be amazed at how fast it's all over and you feel normal again!
Best of luck to you.

Probably not a bad thing to do what you can to get more protein.  If you can build up your red cell count, you'll not only heal faster, but you'll have more energy.  If you aren't a big meat eater, you can do eggs, beans, peanut butter, etc.  I assume you will have this done laproscopically?  Just take it easy when the surgery is complete and don't expect to jump right back in to normal activity.  Give your body a chance to heal.  Your body will tell you when it's ready to pick back up where you left off.

Good luck.  I hope everything turns out well for you.
