Pregnancy after one ovary removal

Pregnancy after one ovary removal

I am having surgery this Friday for a possible ovarian removal due to continued problems with cyst. I have an 11 year old daughter whom I concieved very easily. I have tried to get pregnant again over the years with no success. I have heard that the other ovary will take over if one is gone but I am sill concerned this will not happen. It is my choice rather to take the ovary or not. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.   Do I have the ovary removed hoping the other ovary will kick in and I will get pregnant or do I keep the ovary as long as I can and possibly have another surgery if I get more cyst. Any women who have one ovary and have children, I would really like to hear from you!! Thanks

Welcome!  There are so many women here who have had children with one ovary and less!  The other ovary will take over and you should not have any problems.  Just wait a while and the ladies with success stories will be along to share with you.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed

Dear Mandy --
I was born with no left ovary, and still have two healthy daughters. One was a bit slow in coming, but my one ovary finally did the job just fine!
Good luck with whatever you decide.

I had three kids with one ovary, no problem.

So they are letting YOU decide?  Take off the cyst and keep the ovary, and hope it stops being cystic, or, get rid of it and hope you do fine with the other ovary.
My 2 cents... I'd keep the ovary if it was possible. What have been your "continued problems"....other surgeries, or what?
Most doctors these days really strongly believe in not removing healthy organs.  If it appears healthy after they repair it (remove the cyst) they might be tempted to leave it in.  What a dilemma.
Let us know what happens....
Best wishes, Katie

My Mom and Dad had three children. Then my Mom suffered from ovarian cysts for 11 years. She had to have one of her ovaries removed. As the story goes, the doc one day said, "Margaret, well, your problems with cysts are cleared up...you're pregnant" (this was in 1951). It was a boy. Then she got pregnant once more (5th child) and then I came along in 1953, thus dispelling the myth that was prevalant in those days that girls came from one ovary and boys came from the other. My mom basically said she fooled everyone.

Best of luck to you regarding your decisions. Mary

Responding to my previous comment....My past surgeries have been left ear drum repair, c-section, right cyst removed (size of a grapfruit, gall bladder removed and now 2 cyst on right ovary. The doctor said he wants to wait and see what the ovary looks like but the decision is up to me because I am the one missing work and having all these problems. I really want to have more children and like I said before was unable to have another baby. I really think its because of that right ovary. There comes a point when enough cutting on is enough. My husband and I are really looking into becomming foster parents. I am only 30 and my gall bladder was removed less than 6 months ago and here I am having another surgery Friday. I just pray I wake up to see my daughter and my family. Thanks for everyones comments!!

Well everyone, I had my surgery yesterday and the doctor did have to take the ovary. I had so much scar tissue on it, he couldnt even get to the cyst. Thanks so much for everyones comments about getting pregnant with one ovary. If it wasnt for the remarks up here I probably wouldnt of been able to handle it when I woke up and was told my ovary was gone. The doctor did say my left ovary looked fine so hopefully I will be able to get pregnant. Thanks again!!

I had my left ovary removed in November 2003 due to multiple cysts and some other problems with it.  Seven months later, I was pregnant...although I did use Clomid for that pregnancy.  In total, that was my 20th cycle of TTC.  My 2nd son was a surprise and conceived without any assistance and only one ovary.  My right ovary has completely taken over and for the first time ever my cycles are relatively normal.

I am 29 yrs old and have had my right ovary removed in october due to an ovarian cyst. I am now 18 weeks pregnant my conception date was may 6 so it has been roughly seven months and honestly i wasn't trying. I became comfortable with my partner because i honestly thought my chances of getting pregnant would be less, but this is my miracle baby and i'm truly happy because it was so unexpected. Ladies relax and have fun care free and it will definitly happen. GOOD Luck
