I'm not really scared of the actual procedure although for the past week I've had horrible nighmares about it.  The part that I'm most scared of is that in the past year I've went from nothing wrong to level 3 of precancer.  So to me that means today I don't have cancer but tomorrow, a week from now or even months I could have full cancer. I am having the procedure in the office but I'm having second thought because of all of the nightmares that I've had.  I'm usually not this stressed out but just having a baby and dealing with work and everyday life has made this horrible. I'm so confused about the whole thing and once I have the procedure and then go for my check up and its still not good I think I'm just going to ask for a hestorectomy(I'm sure I spelled this wrong). I just wish this was easier but I guess knowing that any day you could have cancer isn't easy at all.

I don't see why they wouldn't let your husband in with you. My doctor always asks if I want a nurse present.

Before taking anything before procedure I'd talk to the doctor first, unless it motrin for pain. Ask for something to calm your nerves.

You can do this. Do what I do. Squeeze your eyes shut, but don't tense your bottom let that relax. This procedure is nothing compared to a laparscopy. You'll breeze right on through this.

I think the pressure part was just the speculm (sp that thing they put inside for paps tests).

Thanks for the reassurance but I did feel the biopsys, I had four taken and this isn't the first time that i have had a biopsy done.  I have a child, I've had four laporscopies for cysts on my ovaries, but never a c section.  I've seriously considered going to psycho therapy for my fear of needles.  When I had my son, he's only five months old, i actually worked my self up so much that they had to re stabilize me and the man giving me the epidural had to try again.  I'm just so terrified that I'm not going to be able to go through with the procedure because of the needle.  I've sunken my own veins in before when an unsuspecting nurse was just trying to put an iv in for a car accident i was in.  I have a great doctor and he knows my fears and I'm pretty sure that he is just as pleased as i am about the whole thing.  I know that there are some drugs that they say not to take before getting a procedure done but I don't know what they are.  I have a hydrocodone from a surgery that i had three weeks ago but I don't know if I should take it or not.  And I'm sorry I just have to ask, what does pressure mean to you and how bad did it burn? Everytime a doctor had told me about pressure it hurts. Do you think that they would let my husband be in there with me to calm me down?  Thank you again for your help, I'm just so scared.

Believe you me, I know the feeling. I hated needles with a passion. I had this joke with doctor that he was on the wrong end of me. I hated needles and I liked to kick. He asked me if he needed a helmet to proform the procedure. My procedure was fine. I didn't feel the needle. Let me ask you did you feel anything when they did the biopsy?

If your doctor is patient and understanding, he'll walk you through everything. My doctor told me what he was doing through out the whole procedure, but one. The needle. He just told me not to look. You'll want to take a motrin a 1/2 hour before. Just make sure you relax. I know it is hard because it is scary. The doctor will numb the cervix with a shot. I didn't watch the actual procedure. I just laid there, and concentrated on relaxing and breathing. When he was done I laid there for a little longer, then got up put a pad on the nurse brought and scheduled a follow up appointment and went home. You might want to take another motrin. I didn't feel anything but pressure and little burning sensation. This is what I remember. My procedure was done back in 1998, but I remember being nervous and scared.

After having two children your fear of needles lessens. I still don't like them, but I deal alot better now. At least I don't kick and scream now. Of course since then I've had 2-laporscopies and 2-C-sections. But I'm still nervous everytime I have to have something done. It's normal, just try to relax, and it will be over before you know it. If you need talk just post. Paula

Hi i'm 21 and cancer runs HEAVY in my family.  I was just told that I have to have a leep because of pre cancerous cells and I was just wondering what actually happens during the procedure?  Does it hurt?  My doctor said he would do it in the office, does that mean he wants to stick a needle in my cervix? Because if thats the case I will just  be out under.  I would just hate to make an appointment and then not keep it because i have this terrible fear of needles.  Thank you for anything that you can tell me

The procedure is harmless.  But like I said in post above. Take your own pad unless you like hospital pads. I had mine done in the Dr's. Office. I was nervous, but the thought of it turning to cancer made me even more nervous. If yours is going to be outpatient in the hospital, you have nothing to worry about. It'll be over before you know it. As for children I went on to have 2 beautiful girls.  Talk to your doctor and ask him however, your chances of having children after the procedure.

I am very nervous and upset.  I had a colposcopy done two weeks ago at my Dr.s office.  I shook out of control the whole time.  Thank goodness my doctor and his wonderful nurse were very patient with me.
The results came back with abnormalities and now the Doctor want to do the Leep procedure on me in the hospital.  I am so worried and scared..

One of my questions is...Does the Leep procedure hinder the chance of having children?
Thanks, T

My procedure was preformed in the doctors office. He gave me a local. I didn't feel a thing. But make sure you bring a pad, or they give you one of those that feel like a diaper.

I had a LEEP procedure done several years ago after an abnormal PAP and colposcopy. Mine was done in the hospital under general anesthesia. The procedure itself is fairly quick, maybe 15 minutes or so, then I spent an hour in recovery,  though I was wide awake and alert very quickly. I don't exactly know why my gyn did mine in the hospital and under general anesthesia rather than in the office,  but personally I was glad to be "out" for the whole thing and to wake up after it was all done :-)  I believe my instructions were no intercourse for 2 weeks while the cervix heals.  I honestly don't recall any instictions about sex before the procedure. I'd check with the Dr. on that.

After the LEEP you should not:

Have sexual intercourse for as long as recommended by your physician

Lift heavy objects

Use tampons

Douche

Take tub baths--take showers only to prevent infection

these are the recommended no-nos after the LEEP
