Question about Cysts...

by Angel7094, Oct 28, 2009 12:39PM
Just to give a little background:
I have a strong history on my mothers (and fathers) side of cancer. My mother in fact has ovarian cancer and history of cysts.

Yesterday I was just told from my Dr that after looking at my CT Scan results she found a 2CM cyst on my right ovary. She said that she wants to do a transvaginal ultrasound to see if there are anymore. She stated that she didn't know why this 2CM cyst would cause me so much pain. She also said that she isn't concerned about this and that a woman my age this is normal. She said that we naturally have cysts and over time, one dominates the others and that stays to help with ovulation?

After performing the ultrasound- she said that I can opt to do a endoscopic procedure to see if there is anything else. She pretty much left it up to me for that.

My question is; should I push the issue? here are my symptoms:

1)Pain during/after intercourse
2)feels like someone is squeezing my ovaries
3)When I sit, I get sharp pains through my colon
4)Very uncomfortable during my cycle
5)bloating constantly
6)Can wear pants that are tight around my hips because it pushes on my pelvic area making it very painful
7)very hard to do a bowel movement- sometimes I am constipated, and all the time I feel pain in my ovaries    when I go.

I know that there are certain guidelines that you have to abide by. I just want to know if my Dr is steering me in the right direction and/or handling this with the correct urgency. She stated that she isn't really concerned...

Thank you VERY much!

Angel

Dear Angel
thank you so much for your excellent question.
I do agree with your doctor. 2 cm cysts are about the normal size of cysts of ovulation.
However, you are clearly uncomfortable and something is going on.

It could be that you have endometriosis which is a benign condition that can cause alot of pain. You could have irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, or other benign but uncomfortable conditions.

It is unlikely but not impossible for a 25 year old to develop ovarian cancer.

It may be that a good evaluation by laparosocpy will help guide an intevention to help you feel more comfortable
best wishes
