Question for everyone about Dr Christine Northrup books re menopause

by AnotherKatie, Feb 18, 2006 12:00AM
I attempted to read some of Dr Northrup's book The Wisdom of Menopause.  I am just throwing this question out to those who may have read her, or seen her taped lectures on PBS.  What do you think of her and her philosophy?
Thank you
Katie

I read one of her books, but it must have been nearly 10 years ago.  I think the title was something about Womens' Minds and Bodies, maybe?  I have also seen at least one of her lectures on PBS.

Generally, I agree with much of what she writes.  But that is easy for me, since I was raised from early childhood to think much as she does.

Honestly, I think that her work would be of greatest benefit to women if all male doctors were required to read her books or see her lectures.  I have seen some male doctors who have taken the time to at least attempt to understand the female body and mind connection, and it really shows in their treatment of patients.    But many of the men just do not "get it."

AnotherKatie, I love Dr. Northrup and I recommend her book constantly. In fact, I just loaned it out today to a friend starting to have many questions about menopause.

Before I had my surgery for Ovarian cancer (in 2000) a friend gave me her book, the first "Women's Wisdom, Women's Bodies"  I think that is the title, anyway, it was cool because I had owned a copy for about five years.....I liked the book and it helped me when I was suffering from severe cervical dysplasia. It gave me information so that I could take a more active role in my health care rather than go at it not understanding anything.

But I must say that I will always have a soft spot for the Menopause book. After my hysterectomy I was having problems (from hormonal imbalance) and I discovered "The Wisdom of  Menopause" book which she released around the time of my surgery. It was through this book that I became informed about the bioidentical hormones which have greatly enhanced my life.

I love the fact that she promised herself that she would not write a book about menopause until she started to go through it herself.

I can also tell you that I have a friend (a women for whom I nannied back in the late 70's) who flew to Maine to see Dr. Northrup before she retired so that she could concentrate on her lecture/book series. My friend was not getting any relief from menopausal symptoms and so she went straight to the expert and was very pleased.

She strikes me as very sensitive and kind. I have seen her on "Oprah," and PBS specials. I think you can't go wrong using her books as your main reference books. Take care, Mary

I saw Dr. Northrup on Opra Winfrey Show today (01/22/09).  I am intrigued with her opinions on Bio Identical Hormonal treament as opposed to  synthetic hormone treatment.  It's worth reading "The Wisdom of Menopause; as I have experienced hormonal imbalance due to a thyroidectomy and a total hysterectomy--all within one year of each other.  I need HELP!
