Questions about hair regrowth

by baguba, Jun 25, 2007 12:00AM
In the big scheme of things, this is really petty, but none the less a concern of mine.  I finished 6 rounds of carbo/taxol in October, then began a years' maint. program of taxol alone.  Onc. said hair would grow back AFTER Taxol maint. completed.  Well, it started to grow back two months later (very white - but a full head of thin hair none the less.  This was not the texture nor thickness that grew back 5 years ago after first 6 rounds. My onc. was surprised I had any hair at all at this point.I even  needed to get two hair cuts within the last two months. but still wore my wig as I still don't have the confidence to "flip it". Then just when I was ready to take the plunge, my hair started to thin and is now falling out in clumps all over again. I have a couple of questions:  has this happened to anyone else? Could it be from blow drying it?  And if so, does it really grow back to our "normal" hair after all is said and done with the chemo?  Sorry for the long "vain" post, but I'm worried I may be bald for good!  Any suggestions on how to handle this????  Supplements, vitamins, hair products? I remember I said I would never complain about a bad hair day again, but I have to admit I'm getting a little anxious........I may have no hair to complain about LOL.....Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.  Hope everyone is doing well.  Regards to all....Judie :)

When you find any supplements that will make my hair grow back thick, please let me know!

My hair is shot. It is very fine and scarce. I wear a wig all the time when I go out or scarf. After my first chemo in 2003, it never grew back to normal. I have seen other's hair grow in really thick but not me. I also am hypothyroid which doesn't help. Are you? And if not, maybe you could check your thyroid levels. (If that is the reason, I don't know)

Thanks for the info.  I really don't know what the problem is.  According to my onc. I shouldn't have had hair regrowth at all, as I am still on Taxol and that is one of the drugs that causes hair loss.  So when my hair started growing back I was thrilled.  But then all of a sudden it started to thin and fall out again.  Back in 2002 after chemo it grew in thick and healthy.  I never had a thyroid problem before, but I will have mine checked when I see the doc next visit.  I am assuming it will grow back like it did last time AFTER the chemo is complete.  In the mean time I was so looking forward to shedding the wig for the hot summer months, but I guess I am going to have to make some fashion statements with scarves and turbins.  I will keep you posted of any supplements that I may find out there that aid in the growth process.  Best wishes to you.  Judie :)
