Now, I guess it is time to fill in a bit of my history... At 18 months of age, I, along with several other people, contracted
Shigella flexneri via a friend of friends. My brother died and my eldest sister almost died. We were all quaranteened; some longer than others. My sister and I were in hospital the longest.
Whilst in hospital, the Dr.s told my parents that it was a 'gram negative' condition, and that it could lie dormant indefinitely in our bodies.
Now, with feminine conditions common in our family, but not PID that I am aware of; is it possible that the Shigella in my system could have caused my condition?
If there are any medically trained people out there who may have a clue, please help me. I need to get my head around this before my GYN appt. on Thursday; and so I possibly know whether to address this issue with him.
Thank you for any advice given.
In much love and peace,
God bless you all,
icey
Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and advice, Gatsby. I have decided you are right, and I should tell my GYN this, even if he doesn't think it is relevent to my condition. (I look forward to having a name for 'this')
To find it, I asked google.ca "Could Shigella Fleneri cause PID?" A few articles came up. They are quite technical, but made me wonder: have you ever been treated with a heavy dose of antibiotics for this? Have you seen a specialist, in infectious diseases perhaps? I think you are on the right track and it would be terrible to have a hysterectomy if this could be treated. Keep in touch and let us know how you do. Join us on our MSN site if you have time....

Thank you for posting this information here also.
In answer to your questions...I don't know!
I was only 18 months old at the time, and the doctors did not know what they were treating for a very long time. They kept us in quarantine for a long time, running test after test on us. 5 of us got it really bad, and two only spent a week in hospital with it, as they only got very mild doses of it. My sister and I spent the longest time in hospital, then they let us out, but we had to go back again.
This all took place in 1972, so I gather the information they would have had back then on the disease would have been rather limited at best.
I have been trying to find articles which may indicate they can eliminate dormant Shigella Flexneri these days, but I haven't had any luck so far.
I am going to my GYN on Thursday, and I will run this past him. He may be able to run tests to determine if it is the SF causing this, and if it is, we may be able to cure it without surgery. (If you hadn't guessed; I am not excited about having a hysterectomy, but will if there is no other recourse.)
I agree with you totally, avoid it if you can. Don't get rushed into it either. Print up that article and study it, quite good info there. Have a look at the referrences at the end too, that may give you more places to look. You can go to a medical library at the University and research too, but you need to go through some hoops. Don't let your doctor brush you off, from reading that article I think you are TOTALLY correct. You need a specialist.

I found an article on google.ca that you should read. I think you are onto something with your suspicions.
It is
