Recovery after surgery

Hi,

My mother had a hole in her bowel+bowel blockage (she had severe pain with swollen abdominal), and required emmergency ( very risky) surgery which went OK, but was a miracle. They removed a part of the small and large bowel as those parts were dead.The surgeon told us that she has a long way to go since, the recovery is going to be very slow. She is of course in ICU, and will stay there for quite sometime.
History of Ovarian cancer.

My question is: why her face and hands are swollen? her eyes are also became yellow colour. is it because of the fluid or it's the liver function?
