Recovery for Laparoscopy surgery for Endometriosis

I had laparoscopy surgery at 28 to remove some mild Endometriosis in my cul de sac. Before that I had to be confined to my house for 7 weeks because of how painful the pain was. My surgery went well. However, I don't seem to recover in the 2-3 week period like they always say. By the fourth week I thought I was feeling better so I started walking 25 minutes every morning after breakfast and doing some light work like dishes. At the end of the fourth week it felt like the 1st week: my incision area was hurting so bad I had to go to the ER, but my CT scans are negative. I was told to rest, so since then I have been resting at home. I am on my 8th week and my incision area still hurts, especially in the mornings up until mid-day and then it gets better. Acupuncture is helping too, I do it twice a week so I don't have to take pain meds, however I am still not feeling well enough to go back to work. Is it normal that it takes this long to heal?

Hi There

laparoscopy is major surgery. It sounds like you did too much too soon. You mos likely sprained your abdominal muscles. Once you get a muscle pull or sprain,it can take months before the pain goes away.

However, you should see your surgeon for a check up to rule out two rare but important complications of surgery:
infection
incisional hernia

please ask your doctor about these possibilities.
best wishes

I always think that the body is very wise.
listen to your body
if you do something and it hurts, your body is telling you don't do it yet

healing always takes longer than you think. It is frustrating!! But ultimately, all will be well

Hi There,
surgery always takes more out of you than you expect. It takes longer to heal than you expect. Some people even get a bit depressed because of the trauma of surgery. But all will eventually get better

Thank you for the response. I don't have infections because I had blood work and urine tests done. I will ask my doctor about the incisional hernia. From the outside it looks good, it's the inside that bothers me. The GYN thinks that at this point I should move around, walk a bit, like 10-15minutes 2-3 times a day. I have been doing that now for about 4 days. Should I keep moving even though the incisions are still sore inside? I don't see any other way to strengthen my muscles, i feel like they will be so weak if I just lay around. When i sit or sleep for a long time it hurts even more. Thanks again, Dr. Goodman!

I had a c section on the 26th of April.  Have had bad pain since.  Was put back in the hospital 2 1/2 weeks after c section.  That infection resolved itself, but now very bad pain right above my incision.  The Dr is doing laparoscopic surgery next week, don't know how I can go another week with this pain, but she thinks that it is more of a nerve stuck.  She said that she could not do both surgeries at the same time.  So she was going to do this one and if it did not work then look into the other one.  One is laparoscopy and the other is opening up the incision to release the nerve.  Can both not be done at the same time.  Just have high hopes for next week and don't want to have pain any more.  AHAHAH

Also, the pain deep down around the incisions in the left and right side is very frustrating! I have rough mornings, that is when the pain is the worst. I don't want to be on painkillers because I don't want my body to get used to them, I want it to fight. Is it safe to take painkillers until the pain subsides to the point that at least it is manageable?

Hi Dr. Goodman,

I still have pain in the incision area, sometimes it hurts bad, and sometimes it's better. Also, I found out a few days ago that I had a UTI so I'm currently on antibiotics. My body hasn't recovered fully, and I understand it takes up to 6 months to a year to do that. Is it safe for me at this point to take like a 16 hour plane trip to visit some relatives? My friends are advising me against it. As a doctor, what would you advise a patient who asked you the same question? Should they wait a few more months until they're a bit more better? Thanks in advance, I appreciate it.
