Recurrence

by Kayakev, May 27, 2003 12:00AM
Two years ago my 57 year old wife had both ovaries removed, due to stage 4 ovarian cancer. A total hysterecotomy also.

She has been on chemo off and on, mostly on, since then. She has her CA125 tested regulary, at least once a month. She has been through two different types of "platen" type drugs, and is now on a third type. Each time her numbers go down, then up again. Her CA 125 is at around 900.

So far, neither of her doctors have ordered anything other than more chemo. I am wondering why scans are not being ordered to see if there is another tumor somewhere. They keep saying it is cellular, and a scan wouldn't show anything, hence the chemo.

What do they mean by cellular, and do you think that not doing scans at this point is normal?

I have been in your place.  My wifes CA 125 numbers doubled then doubled again.  The doctors have never done a PET scan on her.  They said the insurance would not pay for it.  When this happened I forced the issue and got my PET scan.  Now I have to wait till Aug 10 to find out the news.

What they mean by cellular as opposed to a tumor, is that cells have not combined yet to form a tumor.  at least that is what I understand it to be by asking my wife's doctor.

if I can be any further help please let me know.  You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers

I don't know if you noticed, but the thread you posted on is from May, 2003 which was 6 years ago.

Please keep us posted on your wife's condition, and good for you to have been assertive in getting her the PET scan.
