Recurrent ovarian cancer

Having stage IIb in 2002.  Had complete hysty, debulking.   six treatment of taxol and carboplatin.  I was free of
cancer.     It has now recurred.   I am told this is a stage 4 and that it is on the  liver.  I am back taking the same chemo treatment, but have been told this will be an on going thing like a chronic disease.  Is this true

Sorry that you're having a recurrence.  I agree with Laurel; please look into radiofrequency ablation.  A new treatment which painlessly kills tumors on the liver.

We are lucky that this disease is, for some,  considered "chronic."  It used to be 100% fatal.  All we can do is to put up with treatments until better and better treatments are at our disposal. New chemo drugs and combinations are being found quickly, as are treatments like radiofrequency ablation.

Best of luck to you.

I hoped everything would turn out well for you. It is really good that you have a 5 year cancer free remission. I hope that the treatment for you would work - my mum too had cancer spread to liver - chemo killed it off.

Pat,
Yes, when it reaches the liver it is considered stage IV and is treated as a chtonic disease. But since you had good results the first time and a fairly long remission, I see no reason why that could not happen again. I have met several women who were diagnoses at stage IV, had good response, and went in to remission and have yet to have a recurrence.
Is the liver the only place it has come back to? A couple of the above posts mentioned radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and that is definately something you should look into.
I was dx at stage IV with mets to the liver in 05. So far I have had 2 RFA's done with good results. My only problem is that it keeps coming back. (my liver was full of cancer at the time I was dx) The procedure is done by what is known as an interventional radiologist, and is fairly simple, requiring only an over night stay in the hospital, with little to no pain afterwards. The only requirement is that the tumors be as small as possible (I am thinking 1 cm). But the chemo you are on my get rid of it for you. The RFA is something to think about though if the tumors do not go away with chemo.
I wish you luck that your chemo will get rid of it and that you will be able to once again enjoy being in remission.
