SURVIVOR'S COURSE

SURVIVOR'S COURSE

The Gynecologic Cancer Foundation is sponsoring this course in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, March 8, 2008.  ,

The SGO (Society of Gyn Onc) meeting, starts the following day, Sunday,  March 9-12,2008, also in
Tampa.

Below are the links for the 2 conferences.  The SGO conference is THE annual conference for gyn/oncs; meaning it's the BIGGIE conference of the year for them.
Unfortunately, I can't attend.  I wish I could because I really would like to talk to the docs face to face.  I know several survivors that are going for that reason.

We need to try and get some long time survivors to come here and boost up some moral .  I might just go to some of the sites and ask them to visit, tell their stories and show that this disease can be beat.  I am too far from Tampa to attend, wish they could make some of it available to us on the web.

New therapies. I tell my patients that more and more women are living longer with ovarian cancer today than in decades past thanks to the latest treatments. Chemotherapy drugs include cisplatin (Platinol), carboplatin (Paraplatin) and paclitaxel (Taxol). In particular, doctors have found that combining carboplatin and paclitaxel helps shrink tumor size in the majority of women with newly diagnosed ovarian cancer. In addition, we can now offer some patients intraperitoneal chemotherapy — in which chemo is aimed directly at the site of the tumor. In this case, the chemotherapy drug is delivered via a catheter directly into the abdominal (peritoneal) cavity. (Most ovarian cancers tend to remain confined to the abdomen — even once they've spread.) This treatment is still being studied and debated, but some early studies have shown that it can be effective in prolonging survival, especially in women who have very little tumor confined to the abdomen after surgery. Furthermore, ovarian cancer research is receiving more attention and funding than in decades past, which may lead to even better, more tailored treatments in the future.

This course plus many others are online.  Here's the link to one of the courses http://fora.tv/2007/10/20/2007_Ovarian_Cancer_Survivors__Course_Part_2

Also, the GCF site has a Wall of Hope and there are many inspirational stories there.
