Soreness and pain after first day back at work...can anyone help?

BY
Hi Guys, I had both ovaries removed due to cysts on 13th December 06, and went back to work for the first time on 8th January.  Although I have office job, and took it easy, now find I'm very sore.  Has anyone experienced the same?  I felt fine until after the first day back at work!

After the first week back at work I am tired, but feel things have been getting a little better each day.  First two days were a nightmare, as I had first period since having the op.  It was abit heavy and made my stomach feel very sore and painful.  However, it has now ended, so will see how the next period goes.  Doc said just to take it easy at work, as I will experience some niggly pains etc.  I have just been resting and sleeping most evenings which has helped.  Next week I can only get stronger!

I know what you're going through. I went back to an office job last week 3 weeks after a laporotomy and removal of a tennis ball sized dermoid cyst/tumor/teratoma- whatever the word of the week is. I went home after the first day and just took a nap, as the week went on it got better, but I went in this week and Tuesday I had to go home because I thought I was just going to pass out at my desk. I think over time it will get better. As for the lifting, unfortunately I have had to do some of that at home just 10-15lbs, but it takes a toll to fill the wood stove. I keep trying to do what I used to and I know I have to limit myself, this has definitely been a humbling experience.

Update on daughter going back to work.  she can't handle the full shift yet, told them today it was going to be half days for another month. Her energy level cuts out after 5 hours.

Daughter had her surgery July 3rd, finished chemo in November, just went back to work yesterday. She was lucky, had over 600 hours of sick leave  and 6 weeks vacation time built up, her pay kept on till almost Christmas. She went into work and told them what her limitations are, she will be able to leave any time during the day that she needs to, no lifting { lifting disabled people for toileting }, no standing for an hour to do tube feedings. Her employer wanted her back in whatever capacity she can handle. Talk to your employers, if they care about you , they will work with you. It is not worth your future health to over do at work and set yourselves back.

Hi. I m on my feet for 6-10 hours and its a manual job(lifting anything from 5lb-75lb)so thats why im in no hurry to return.Having had so much surgery "down below"over the last 22 years i don't want to encourage any more!. Over here we are not allowed to drive for at least 6wks so again things are different. You american women must be made of sterner stuff than us brits!.I find a hot water bottle eases the crampy pains i somtimes get.Stop swiveling!.Remember to get some rest when you get home, easier said than done i know, but at least try. Take care.Dawn

Thanks for the reply, I have booked appointment with GP and if I feel any worse will not go to work!  I'm not going to push myself too much.  Hope you will be able to get back to work soon.  Is your job office based?  Will keep in touch.

I had the same thing happen when I went back.  I went back after 4 weeks (to an office job) after laparotomy and I think the sitting in the chair upright as opposed to laying on the couch really strained the muscles in my stomach that I had not been using.  Although, after a few days I felt much better and I think it really helped to strengthen everything faster.  Just don't lift anything.  I had mine done on October 11th and I'm still iffy on lifting heavy things.

Just make sure to rest when you get home in the evenings. =)

Had exactly the same situation.  I *always* had an ice pack on my abdomen for about 2 months after the surgery. It was the only thing that kept me going.

I recently went back to work after having a laparoctomy on 11/21.  Occassionally I get sore, but I am VERY tired when I get home and towards the afternoon I almost fall asleep at my desk.  Does anyone have idea when I will get my energy back?

Hi! Thanks for response.  I think the same about sitting in the chair, plus I was swivelling around abit (out of habit).  You don't notice it at first then, ouch!  Will not be lifting anything.  All I'm doing is getting to work in the morning (which is only a 10 min drive) taking it easy at work, then coming home and just resting on couch!  The gym is years away yet, ha,ha!!  Goodness, the things us women go through! I work with a great bunch of guys, and they just look at me rather nervously and ask if I'm ok.  Poor chaps, "womens problems" completely throw them!!
God Bless

Hi I had both my ovaries removed on the 22nd nov and im still not at work. I believe the resting time is greater in the uk than in the states but only now do i really feel like i might be ready to go back.I have to see my gp next wk to see if he will allow me to return. Don't forget internal stitches take longer to heal,as do the muscles.Just take it easy and try not to push yourself.I did once and ended up having to have a bowel and bladder repair done,as all the muscles just caved in.Listen to your body.Take care.Dawn
