Stage 1A Grade 3 -Number of Chemo treatments recommended

I had a TAH/BSO to remove a 6 cm endomitroid andenocarcinoma on my left ovary. The cancer was deeply embedded in the tumor and all my lymph nodes were clear.  My Gyn/Onc recommended 3-4 carbol/taxol sessions and then the hemotologist/oncologist who is monitoring my chemo conferred with several other ovarian specialists and they recommended six.

I just finished my third round of chemo and everything has been okay except for mild neuopathy in my feet and hands and a low white blood cell count prior to my last chemo.

I had an appt. today with my gyn/onc and he again repeated that he felt that there would be no significant statistical difference in my outcome, if I only completed 4 sessions.

I'm confused.  I have been trying to locate research information that addresses this and have had little luck.

Also anything I can do to boost my immune system?

Thank you.

I am 40 years old and was diagnosed in April-04 with Stage 1C - Grade 2 with Clear Cell.  I had complete hysterectomy, BSO, omentum and lymphnodes removed.  I consulted with the three top gyn/oncs in New York City and they all recommended the same treatment - surgery as noted above and six rounds of Taxol/Carbo  treatment given every 3 weeks.  My medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering where I was treated explained that they don't know for sure that six cycles are better than three, but he counseled that six would be the more prudent course.  I finished the chemo up at the end of Sept-04.  Let me say that it will probably not be as bad as you think it is going to be.  They have a lot of supporting drugs to help control the side effects.  I imagined that I would be sick as a dog for the full 18 weeks, but I managed pretty well.  You have good days and bad days and it goes by quicker than you would expect.  Good luck to you!

The length of treatment is a preference of each doctor, and is based on their personal experiences in successfully treating patients and on the latest research they have read.  Personally, I tend to go with the preferred treatment regimen of  a hematologist/oncologist, but that does not make my choice the right one for you.  Given that you were likely rendered cancer free after surgery, the chemotherapeutic treatment might be just a precautionary measure and your gyn/onc is probably correct.  It is an important precaution considering that you did have a grade 3 tumor.

I have found that the cancer center staff is the best source for information on protecting or improving your immune system.  Probably because they work hands-on with the patients, it seems those people see everything, everyday.  They can advise you of supplements  and let you know of available prescriptions to request of your doctor; care must be taken not to use a medicine or supplement that will react with your chemotherapy.
