Stage 1C

Hi,

My mom is 55yrs old. Around 4 months back she complained about severe pain in lower abdomen. Later it was detected by ultra sound scan, as ovarian cyst in right ovary. Through laproscopic surgery both the ovaries were removed and biopsy report was obtained. Based on biopsy report doctor confirmed that cyst was due to cancer cells and she was staged as Stage1 grade 3. Does it mean it is Stage 1C? (I am little confused about staging; I read various blogs but could not confirm).

Present condition:
Doctor suggested her 3 chemos followed by hysterectomy and again 3 chemos. She has completed 3 chemos + Hysterectomy + 2 chemos again and last chemo is scheduled after 21 days. During hysterectomy doctor has taken biopsy samples from surroundings of abdomen. and histopathology report has come negative. Does it mean she is free from cancer now? What are the chances of its reoccurance? What are the measures to be taken to avoid reoccurance?

I wanted to attach histopathology report but I am not sure how to do that in this forum.

Thanks

Hi,

It is my mother who is having the disease.

Regarding the symptoms:

It all started with severe pain in right abdomen. After Ultra sound scan it was identified as ovarian cyst. And doctor suggested to go for emergency surgery where in both ovaries were removed (As per the doctor the cyst was due to swelling of right ovary and as a precaution left ovary was also removed; as per doctor post menupause ovaries have less significance)

The removed ovaries were sent for lab test where in cancer cells were identified and based on the Biopsy report Doctor concluded the stage.

Thanks

Just wanted to know if you had any symptoms when you were diagnosed with 1C? Thanks

I'm no expert, but I believe that "grade" refers to the type of tumor, and does not translate to 1C.   Someone who knows more than I do may be able to explain about the different grades of tumors.

I'm a 1A -- one ovary affected, no spread.  I'm coming up on nine years since diagnosis and over eight years since I completed chemo.  The doctor told me he could cure me, and the results of my CA-125 blood tests continue to indicate no recurrance.  I hope that's your mother's status.  Her doctor should see her often at first and than less and less frequently.  I still see my doctor and get a CA-125 every six months.  He says that it's not at all likely that I will have a recurrance but that the chances aren't "zero" and so I keep going in to see him.

If you have the pathology report, you apparently know that there was no cancer elsewhere in the abdomen and presumably no cancer cells in the "washings," which would probably make her a 1C.  Cancer in both ovaries with no spread elsewhere would be designated 1B, I believe.  Stage 2 3 and 4 indicate more advanced cases.

Good luck to you and your mother.
