Surgery Booked

Hi Everyone

Well I'm booked in for a Lapertomy on the 28th aug. Dr says that CT Scan of Cyst and small nodule is still suspicious and that he needs to operate although all my blood tests came back fine.  I am more worried about having surgery than anything else.  What can you do for the nausea ? I have it 24/7 and its driving me crazy. I feel pretty positve about it being benign after reading everyones posts - lets just hope that is the case.

Hi Ribaux, That's great that you are set to go.  Is it laparscopic or lapertomy?   Although I wouldn't choose surgery over a vacation, it really wasn't that bad at all.  You don't have to do much for it, and are out cold.  It's the surgeon who has to do stuff.  I was nervous because I hadn't been through surgery since I was 5, but it wasn't as unpleasant or scarey as I imagined it would be at all.  Glad your doc isn't ignoring the risk (small as it is) and is going to take care of it.  On the nausea, car sickness meds??  Is ginger supposed to help with nausea - you can make ginger tea by boiling a piece of root, or find some candied in a health food store.  Just make sure anything you do isn't contraindicated for surgery.  I wrote something in the last few weeks, to Casey06 with whatever ideas I had to prep for the surgery.  It will be over in no time...!
Best of success and and easy time of it!!!!!

I too am booked for surgery--mine is on 9/6.  I completely understand your worry.  I haven't had any prior surgeries and I'm nervous about what to expect (kind of a baby when it comes to needles, blood, etc.).  I haven't experienced any nausea with mine, but I imagine there must be something you can take--you might want to check with your doctor if there is anything either over the counter or via prescription they can give you to ease it.

Did they give you any additional info regarding your cyst (how large, is it complex, etc.)?  Mine is 8cm and they believe it to be a benign mucinous cystenoma (the spelling of that is probably wrong), but until they get in there and operate they can't be 100% sure.  Will your doctors try to do the procedure via laparascope or are they definitely doing the laparotomy?  My doctor said they will try to remove my cyst and right ovary via laparascopic procedure if possible, but it may turn into a laparotomy.

I know it's hard because I'm in the same boat, but try to keep your mind off it as much as possible or you'll drive yourself crazy.  I've been trying to focus on the fact that I'll finally know for sure what it is and once this is over I'll begin to heal and feel better.  Also, not sure about you, but I know that my nerves have a tendency to upset my stomach so try to stay as calm as possible so you don't aggrevate the nausea.  I'll be praying for you and please let us know how things go.

Hello to all.  I had a laparotomy last week to remove my left ovary, which had a 3.5 cm endometrioma with a suspicous nodule.  They were going to try to remove it laparoscopically but had trouble getting to it since it was attached to my bowel.  The most important advice I can give is regarding the pain medication.  If you are at all sensitive to codeine or codeine-based drugs, ask for something else!  I was given Percocet for pain and it made me violently ill.  The last thing you want is to be vomitting with a stomach incision!!!  Now I'm just taking very strong Ibuprofen. Other than that, you should have someone home with you for 3 - 4 days afterwards - just to help you get around (i.e. on and off the sofa, bed, etc.)  Today is post-op day 6 for me and I feel pretty good.  Still sore but getting around and eating better.

BTW, I had some nausea before my procedure as well.  I was drinking peppermint tea.  There are also prescription meds that help so if you are very uncomfortable with it, you might ask your doctor for something.  I wish you both luck with your procedures - let us know how you are doing.

Hi ! Thanks Curls so much for your support and advice you have been a real comfort.I really appreciate all your feedback. Thanks again.

jms_9967 - I am having a laparotomy and they have told me that htey are removing my left ovary - my cyst is a complex cyst 6.8cm with a 11mm nodule they still seem to deem it as suspicous and have opted for the laparotomy even though all my blood tests and nothing else sinister showed in my CT Scan. I returned to work today as I have been off for a few days and felt that I may as well go back to work feeling miserable rather than stay at home feeling this way. I have constant nausea, aching under my ribs and a constant ache and pain in my lower stomach and left side groin along with indigestion -  constant enough to drive me crazy, So the operation in a way will be a relief so that I can get back to feeling normal (I hope) after a while anyway. If you look back I posted my ultra sound results about a week ago. I wish you all the best for your op and will be thinking of you.

Rreba - I have read your earlier post and am so happy that eveything has turned out well for you. I wish you a speedy recovery. Take care and thank you for your kind thoughts.
