Surgery and UTIs

I had a dermoid tumor along with my ovary and fallopian tube removed via laparscopic surgery in 5 months ago.  Since then I seem to get continuous urinary track infections that happen about one week after my period starts.  I went to the doc today and he said that if this persists then come back and he'll send me to a Urologist b/c the nerves associated with my bladder muscles may have been damaged which prevents me from completely emptying my bladder. ????  This seems like a possibility as I use to be a power pee'er but not anymore...    Anyone have any thoughts on this or similar experiences?

Yes, that is true, your bladder may not be bouncing back as it should.  A good way to empty the bladder is to lean forward when you think you have stopped peeing.  This helps the bladder push out what is left.  This may help your bladder to also get back in shape.  It has helped me after surgery.  I hope you are feeling better.

You also need to drink lots of water and cranberry juice.  It will help clean out the bladder.  Hopefully this will help.  Kasie

I just finished a 6 month course of Cipro for a recurrent UTI.  The first one I had sent me to the ER three weeks post surgery because I was in so much pain, I just knew I'd ruptured something from the surgery.  I'd had bowel resection in addition to TAH/BSO, part of my omentum removed, and an umbilical hernia sack removed that was all involved with my cancer.  It turns out, the tumor was so large, it caused my uriters to "bend", therefore not allowing my bladder to completly evacuate.  My doctor said chances are, once you get one UTI, you are likely to continue getting them, and sometimes, people are on antibiotics up to a year just trying to kill the nasty bugger.  How large was your dermoid?  Is it possible it might have pushed anything out of whack?

I agree with Kasie.  Drink, drink, drink.  My Nutritionist says you need to take your weight, divide it in half, and that's the number of ounces of decaffeinated liquid you should have each day.  Of course, most of it needs to be water, but 100% fruit juice, and decaffeinated tea and coffee are okay, too.  All that liquid will sure get your bladder working!

Hope you find some relief.  Those things are just nasty!
