Surgery date - I am really nervous!

Hi everyone,

I received a call from the surgeon's office today. They scheduled my surgery for Tuesday at 12:30pm. The reality that I am really going to have this surgery hit me pretty hard. I was okay knowing it would be within the next week or possibly the first week of October but Tuesday seems so soon. Anyway, if the tumor appears to be cancerous the surgeon will just close me up. If it doesn't appear to be cancerous, they will remove it and get rid of the massive amount of adhesions I have. This would be great news because I have had so many bowel obstruction due to the adhesions that I have been in and out of the hospital with NG tubes in my nose 7 times in the last year. So, if I do get the adhesions removed my life will change dramatically. I really hope it is not cancer and that my life will be mine again. Does anyone know how long of a stay I will have? They are doing a laporotomy, not the lapriscopic surgery.

Thanks,
Deidre

Did the gyno see the adhesions in the CT and sono? I had a MRI, the doc ordered one set w/out contrast and one set with contrast and the tech said " the pictures came out okay you don't need the set with contrast" now after reading about MRI's and endometriomis it says the adhesions will show up ONLY with contrast so if I did have the set taken w/contrast like i should have I wouldn't have needed a 2nd surgery, he would have seen them the 1st time instead of opening me up and finding out so i am pretty sick mentally from th stress i am not up for this upcoming surgery within 2-4 weeks.
I am glad you have a good support system, it is very important, I have a great Mom who lives upstate and a dear close girlfriend who has helped me alot, and a couple of other girlfriends, even though my husband and i have been seperated for years but he cares and drives me nuts at times, I live w/ my dad who is not supportive, he fears fear and can't hold a discussion regarding my health problem so at times i feel lonley living with him.
I will be praying for you! If you need to talk feel free.
God bless!

I had a CT and a sonogram. As well as those wonderful pelvic exams. My grandmother passed away from Ovarian cancer a few years ago and had the same symptoms and medical history as I do. I know that the majority of masses found in the pelvic area are benign but the way the doctors are being so "cautious" with their wording concerns me. I am very fortunate that I have a great support system. My mother is flying in on for the surgery and a good friend of mine who is a MD is coming down from Los Angeles to be with my family and speak to the surgeon. Also, my brother is a ER doctor in New York so I am very lucky to have an awesome support system. My husband will be their as well, I probably should have mentioned him first. Would a MRI have told me more about my mass or is a CT and sonogram just as good.

Hi Deidre
My heart goes out to you, I will be praying you won't have cancer and have a speedy recovery. The waitng gets you sick, but then again right before surgery you get tense as well, so you can't win. I had surgery a month ago, I was supposed to get a laporotomy on my left ovary cause I have a ovaran tumor and my gyno opened me up and closed me up with a 11 inch incision and said my ovaran tumor was fuised along my pelvic bone, intestine and colon and like you I have adhesions all over my uterus, intestines, colon and maybe kidney. Now they are getting 3 surgeons to work on me : a urologist to put stents in my bladder, a gyno/oncologist to see if the tumor and adhesions are cancerous or not he said they have to remove parts of my intestine and colon with the adhesions and I may end up with a colostomy bag and a hysterectomy ,and then the other gyno will be there, if the adhesions are not cancerous the gyno said it looks like stage 4 endometriomis. The not knowing and the waiting are very stressful. Did you have a MRI done?
God Bless!

You could also ask to have a gyn/oc on hand when you go into surgery. This way if the tumor looks cancerous, the gyn/onc can get in there and do it right.

Hi,

He is a OB?GYN. I will ask him that very question on Monday when I see him for my pre-op. I don't know why they would close me up. I just thought that he wouldn't want to have it sppread because sometimes cancers are worse if you go in to remove the cancer because of quick cell growth when you get opened up. However, I am not a doctor so I am going to press him on this issue. If I am not satisfied with the answer I will get a 2nd opinion. I do see a Oncology DR. as well and my ob/gyn has been in contact with him. If anyone lives in San Diego his name is Dr. Kosty at Scripps Clinic and Research. He is AWESOME.

I am glad you have a surgery date.  My one question is why would the dr. just close you up if it is cancer?  Is your dr. a gyn/onc?  If not, would you please see one before your surgery to get a 2nd opinion?  You only have one chance to get it right the first time!  Please seek the 2nd opinion.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed
