Update on mum....... and Femara.

Mum has finished her chemo for a reoocruanrce of OVCA. CA125 was 60 but now 18. The CT scan showed that the swollen lymph nodes have now shrunk back to normal, the masses in her pelvis have gone and the only thing thats left is a small spot in her liver which they are not sure whether its cancerous or a scar left from the cancer. They have given mum a hormone tablet called femara to take for the rest of her life which they have said is an anti cancer drug and will kill any cancer cells. Has anyone had this?
I am pleased that the chemo has worked.

I had a good friend that was on Femara for about 6 months for a recurrence, not as a maintance drug....for the 6 months it did a good job of keeping the cancer stable so that they could then start another round of chemo.

I also know someone that has been on Armidex - same type of drug of 7 years and she too although she has a high CA125, the scans are all clear....so the drug has helped her as well.

Good luck and let us know how she does.

Hi!  One of the anti-estrogen drugs, Aromasin, is in the same family as Femara.  These drugs are very new and thus far had been used only with breast cancer patients.  Aromasin is now in clinical trials for ovarian cancer recurrence.
I did not wait to see the outcome of the trials; I got a prescription for it and have been on it for almost a year.  It cuts the estrogen production in the body, so that if your cancer is estrogen receptive, it's less likely that it will recur.  I'm hoping for the best, because the side effects are kinda tough.  So, yep, you bettcha I'm on it!
