Vaginal Swab results

by D-fly, Nov 23, 2005 12:00AM
Hi girls,

I know a vaginal swab is off topic here but I wanted to know if anyone else has come across this when they've had gynecological issues.

"Gram stained smear shows altered vaginal flora, but is not consistent with bacterial vaginosis.  No evidence of yeast or Trichomonas vaginalis seen."

Any suggestions?

I am not sure what that means. But a couple months ago when I was starting to have pelvic pain and noticed an unusual vaginal discharge they took a swab and at first couldn't figure out the problem. All the usual tests they run came back negative. Then the lab for some reason ran the culture again and found beta strep. As I understand it, vaginal b.strep is mostly found in pregnant women, so that may be why they don't usually test for it. I am not pregnant and have never been pregnant, so my doct couldn't tell me any ideas how I got it. But once they diagnosed it, they put me on an antibiotic.

Thank you Denise.

I didn't even know my doctor did a vaginal swab at the time of my pap. I only discovered this when I asked for a copy of my pap results...and he most certainly did not do any follow-up, so that's why I was wondering if anyone knew what it meant as I don't have any symptoms of infection.

I have been pregnant twice now, and yes the Bstrep is a thing of pregnancy that they test for at the very end of pregnancy.  I've never had it and I am most certainly not pregnant now.

Hmmm...well I'll be seeing my gyno in about 2 weeks and I will most definitely ask him about this swab result.

Thank you again,
D-fly
