What does this all mean?

I am a 30 year old female and recently had an ultrasound done on a cyst found on an MRI.  I am confused by what the doctor told me.  Can you please explain what this means.   From what I have read on other websites, I am totally confused and scared it may be cancerous.

Findings: Uterus has normal echotexture and measures 9.89x4.61x5.80cm.  Myometruim has an unremarkable appearance.  Endometrialo strip measures 0.97cm.  Left ovary measures 3.73x1.57x1.72cm.  Physiological follicals are seen within the left ovary.  Hypoechoic lesion is noted within the left ovary measuring 0.98cm in greatest dimension.  Right ovary measures 4.92x4.88x5.19cm.  Anechoic lesion is seen within the right ovary measuring 3.36x3.97x2.09 cm.  This lesion has an internal septation and small area of nodularity.

Impression:  Left ovary with 0.98cm hypoechoic lesion are described and right ovary with 3.9 partially complex cyst.  Neither cyst is consistant with dermoid.

Should I be concerned?

Thanks for your time and assistance

Hi Ashley,

Thank you so much for putting down the exact ultrasound report.

the uterus is normal

the left ovary is a normal size and contains cysts related to your normal  eggs. Before ovulation, those normal ovarian cysts (that was what the ovary was made for - to pump out eggs to make babies) are called follicles. There is another little cyst (fluid with a skin around it) in the left ovary that is too small to worry about.

the right ovary has a bigger cyst measuring about 3 cm which is a bit over an inch. The most likely thing this is is a cyst after ovulation. These kinds of cysts contain a little blood and produce the normal hormones that occur after ovulation.

The standard reccomendation would be to repeat the ultrasound after a few menstrual cycles 2 to 3 months to see if the cyst goes away. if so , then it is indeed a cyst of ovulation.

If the cyst does not go away, it may be one of many possible things such as endometriosis, small benign tumors, adhesions with fluid and so on.

If a persistent ovarian cyst is causing discomfort or growing, that is a reason to surgically remove it

best wishes
