When will hair start to grow back after chemo?

by dkw139, Jul 28, 2007 10:22AM
Hi,
I just finished up 6 rounds of chemo for Stage IIIC OVCA and was wondering when the hair on my head will start growing back. What about eyelashes and eyebrows?  I noticed the hair on my legs is starting to come back. They predicted it would fall out on day 12-14 of the first round of chemo and that happened right on target.  Can anyone give me a timeline of it growing back in?  Thanks.

Hi, I don't have any experience to help you with, but online it states different things.  For example hair is actually supposed to grow back during treatment...it's usually just too small to see at first or still in the roots.  After that it depends on different factors like how many prior chemos you've had, the chemo itself, and your body.  But, unless your chemo is different, it will grow back.  Supposedly there may be possible differences in the texture/thickness/color

I finished chemo in March 06 and my hair started growing within 2 weeks.  I quit covering my head sometime in April because I wanted my scalp to breath, and I had fuzz all over my head.  In May it was about a 1/2 inch.  It took awhile for it to reach it's previous thickness, since hair follicles got killed off at different times.  The lashes and eyebrows started to return in two weeks also, it seemed like one day the lashes were back.  My hair came in curly, but has since gone back to normal.  Enjoy the growth, good luck

My daughters started coming back , enough to see, about 4 weeks after finishing chemo.  It came in a pretty platinum color, curly and soft, she used a Louriel special dye to get it almost back to the orginal color.  It does not grow fast,  If I could post a picture here I would show you, we all think she looks "cute"  she had very long wavy Blonde hair prior to this. Curly top hairdo now.  It is tough to lose your hair but please remember  a womans beauty is what she is inside. Vanity is not a virtue. To anyone that says to you, OH, it is just hair and it will grow back, has never been in your shoes.  Wear the baldness with pride, cover it if you must, but just remember who you are and what you are facing, and keep a positive attitude.

Thanks for the comments.  Actually, I like my 2 wigs better than my own hair.  It also saves a lot of time in the morning and I don't miss dyeing it or going for haircuts!  I was just wondering what to expect with the regrowth.
I was always positve and had a great attitude through my ordeal.  That's what got me through it all so well. I never lost hope and will continue to be optimistic for the future.

Same thing happened to me but hair on my head started growing back after the 3rd round..Eyelash/eybrow after the 6round..But I think what was happening with me is that it would start to grow out then fall out and then grow out again. Now 9 cycles later, hair on my head is about 3 inches long!!

Hair!!!! What's that?  *laugh*....I've not seen mine for 3 years, but I've got a nice wig, and it's like second nature to me to wear my wig. It's very similar to my natural hair, and I started wearing it before I lost my hair back in early 04...so none of my friends even know I have cancer.. let alone, I've got no hair. Oh well... it's the least of my worries. What's a bit of hair between friends? :-)
Wishing you all well... and lots of hair growth. :-)...... Hugs...Helen...
