Worried about my soul mate

My girlfriend has been having increased pain from cramps during menstration.  This has only been over the last year.  She has also been complaining of her olvaries hurting so bad that she can't stand up straight.  I finally talked her into making an appt. with the ob/gyn and her results came back abnormal showing pre cancerous cells.  We have to go back for a follow up in 3 months.

My question:  could the increase of pain be a sign to the future of ovarian cancer?  and what are the chances of being able to have a child?

It sounds like she probably had an abnormal pap smear.  That is a test for cervical cancer not for ovarian cancer.  As far as I know cervical cancer is very treatable if they catch it early.  If they said that the cells are "pre-cancerous" and they don't want you back for three months then -- while I would DEFINITELY go back in three months -- I wouldn't actually worry too much about that until you have more information.

It's awesome and wonderful that you convinced her to go to the doctor.  If she hasn't thanked you for that then I will now - thank you for caring so much about her!   :-)

The pain could be a sign of any number of things.  Ovarian cancer is much more common in older folks (I'm assuming you two are still fairly young) and is not particularly likely.  That said - if she is having symptoms and they are getting worse then she needs to go *back* to the doctor until she figures out what is going on.

Planned Parenthood sometimes has long wait lines but I've always found their medical care to be extremely high-quality for a reasonable price and the folks who work there to be very attentive and wonderful to talk to.  If her last appointment didn't answer her questions about the pain you should either go back soon or you should consider another doctor.  It's really important that she ask questions about the pain really directly and asks them until she gets some answers (or gets set up for some tests that will lead to answers).  It's probably not anything scary - but it could be and if it is than the sooner you know the better for everyone!  Tell her to bring up Ovarian Cancer with the doctor and see what they say - have her ask for a trans-vaginal ultrasound (that will let them see if her ovaries have cysts or masses on them).

My best wishes to you both - and she is lucky to have somebody so willing to look out for her health.

Melissa
