Worried after reading about Ovarian cancer symptoms

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help... I'm 26 and have been experiencing pain in my lower abdomen over the last month along with a change in bowel habits, pain during intercourse, back pain and tiredness.  I had a smear test this time last year which was all clear and swabs done about a month ago where the nurse said I should see my doctor for a pelvic examination due to an inflammed cervix.  I saw my doctor who didn't do a pelvic examination but referred me to get an ultrasound which I'm still awaiting.

My main concern was after reading the symptoms of ovarian cancer I can relate to almost every symptom on the list so have booked myself in to see my nhs doctor again this saturday morning.  I wondered if anyone has had similar symptoms that have turned out to be something different such as endometriosis or possibly nothing at all?  From what I've read on the internet (which is never a good idea I know!) I notice some similarities in symptoms.

Worried worried worried!

Hi Rachel,

Try not to worry.  Odds are with you that it is NOT ovarian cancer.  You are not alone in reading symptoms and then becoming concerned.  Unfortunately, both benign and malignant masses can cause the same symptoms.  It does sound like you may have an ovarian cyst.  Most ovarian cysts turn out to be benign.  It is always very important to investigate new and bothersome symptoms.  That way you have the best odds of catching a malignancy early and of avoiding complications from benign conditions.

Your pap smear and inflamed cervix do not likely have anything to do with ovarian cancer.    Pap smears detect cervical cancer.  Most inflammation and abnormal pap tests don't result in in cancer.  However, these changes mean you do need to have regular and timely follow-up to be on the safe side.  Your gyn will be able to better advise you about your course of treatment for that area.   I am surprised you were only referred for an ultrasound and did not get to address this issue with your doctor.

Many conditiions including benign ovarian cysts and endometriosis can result in the vague symptoms you describe.  The ultrasound will be able to determine if you have a mass on your ovary.  After you get those results, you will have a better understanding of what is going on.   But, be sure to ask your doctor to explain the condition with your cervix and what follow-up is suggested.  You may have two separate issues to follow.

Please try not to worry.  I worried and worried prior to my ovca dx.  But, over the three years since my dx, I have realized that worry really didn't change a thing.  And, you will be able to handle anything that comes your way.  Try to remember that odds are with you that you don't have ovca.   Take care! :)

Hi Shelly,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply, you REALLY have put my mind at rest.  I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow morning where I will be sure to mention the inflammed cervix to see if she can refer me to a gyn.

You're completely right when you say worrying really doesn't change a thing.  I will certainly take this on board.

Thank you for such positivity.  I will be sure to update soon. :o)
