anaesthesia for hyterectomy

by birdcarver, Mar 28, 2006 12:00AM
This forum is totally addicting. I find myself here every few hours between housework and going to the gym and other activities. Anyhow...my newest question is for those who have undergone abdominal hysterectomy (as opposed to laparoscopic or vaginal)....has anyone had it done under a spinal/epidural? Because of my lung problems, I would like to do it that way. My doc said there is a possiblity of spinal but because I am on Coumadin I can't have an epidural (too much risk involved). I am also allergic to morphine so I am wondering about pain control after. I was hoping for an epdiural for that reason. I will get a change to voice these questions when I have my pre-admission clinic visit and see the anaesthetist, but getting first hand accounts from others who have been there is so valuable. I want to thank you all again for sharing your journeys. It makes it so much easier to deal with all of this.

I had spinals not epidurals for my c-secs so they should be able to do it for this, unless there is a reason like the length of the surgery or something like that. C-sec are really pretty quick. The pain control was not hard but don't remember what I had, was nursing, too. I know I had one of the patient pump thing but I know it wasn't morophine. Maybe some one willknow for sure.   Cindi

If you are concerned about sick after general anesthesia-  I also get sick and use the transoderm patch I use for motion sickness.  I have had 3 surgeries in top hospitals in New York City and all said it was fine to use.  Ask your doctor - believe me it works. kah22 Good Luck
