ca125 of 270

by knittingmom, Jul 03, 2009 08:53PM
My 35 yr old daughter went to ED with LLQ pain.  US noted 10 cm mass/cyst.  CT noted 6x14 cm cyst with septation and solid mass.  Ascities in abdomen.  She was D/C home.  F/U with gyn 2 weeks later.  ca125 ordered and was 270.  Apt made with gyn/onc at Moffitt.  US done there noted mass/cyst 9 cm.  (Did appear to flow out of uterus.)  MD stated it did not look like cancer, but endometriosis.  Hyperplasia.  He advised ca125 was so elevated due to endometriosis.  He had us make apt for 6 weeks for another US and ca125.  Stated the ascities was due to the cyst bleeding, also that is what caused the pain.
I showed the US, CT and ca125 to family practice MD and critical care MD while waiting for apt with gyn/onc and they told me they did not feel the prognosis was good.  We were scared silly.  Now I don't know who to believe??  She has two little girls ages 4 and 8.  Our family has never experienced anything like this.  Can ca125 be this high without cancer?  Should we get another opinion or just go with the gyn/onc since this is his speciality.  Any information would be appreciated!

If she was my daughter, I would get another opinion from a different gyn/onc and I would not wait any 6 weeks, either!  I would push to see another onc asap......
Good luck.  Please don't wait......
Peace.

I would just like to share something with you.  I saw a very respected surgeon/oncologist about my gallbladder about a year ago.  He told me that benign conditions can most definitely cause the CA-125 to be elevated.  Endometriosis can cause the CA-125 to be elevated.  I believe that the CA-125 becomes elevated due to inflammation in benign conditions.  Moffitt is a very respected cancer center and some solace can be taken from their opinion.  But, I do understand your terror.  Hearing two radically different opinions would make anyone temporarily insane.  I agree with Dian.  You can't wait 6 weeks.  You'll go crazy.  Push to get some answers sooner.  Another opinion from another gyn/onc is in order even if only to set your mind a little at ease.

I agree with dian & Ramsay.  Another opinion is needed and the 6 wk wait is too long.  Without a biopsy they do not know the mass is only endometriosis.  I would want to know for sure what she is dealing with.  I wish her the best.  Marie

I also agree that another opinion is needed and not to wait for 6 weeks. If you cannot get answers for her Dr then do whatever you can to find another one who will take this all a little more seriously. There are many reasons that her CA125 could be elevated, but with a mass showing up, I would be concerned.
I know that it is all very frightening, but the sooner you find out, the more at ease you will be either way.
