changes to ovarian cysts

by abirke, Oct 08, 2003 12:00AM
I am 59, 2 years past menopause.  In my late 30s I was diagnosed via ultrasound with 2 simple ovarian cysts.  They never resolved and were not removed.  More recently, the cysts were shown on ultrasound to have become complex, much bigger and on removal were found to be cystadenomas.  Do cysts change their type?  Is ovarian cancer more likely to develop in cysts, or in certain types of cysts, or are cysts and cancer independent processes in the ovary?  Thanks.

Hi there. There are clear fluid cysts which are usually fine and there are complex cysts, usually hemorragic (filled with blood or a choclate like substance), why do I know. I am the queen of cysts. I am 36 years old and have had over 27 cysts. My first one was 5.3 cm. and hemmorragic and ended up in surgery which ended up in a week in the hospital. (long story), I have another one right now that is 4.3 cm. and a clear one also. They will cause pain, but the doctor usually likes to wait to see if it will go away (as they put it), or burst. If it pains awful and does not stop within a week, you should see a doctor and have a laproscopy to drain it. Be very careful on the ob you use, for mine ended up in adhesions and 2 wks. in the hospital and losing my uterus. I only have my ovaries left, which don't seem to like me either. I try and deal with the pain for I refuse surgery again unless I can't walk. I have worried of ovarian cancers, but unless you have repeated complex cysts you should not worry, clear fluid ones usually go away on there own and don't cause much of a problem, maybe a day or so of pain. I would talk to your doctors about it, I am very blunt with mine, for all I have been through, I feel a complex cyst should be watched closely. No meds can cure it, they will suggest some type of shot that gives you hormones (Don't do it!!!- It makes your bones weak), there is no quick fix. If you have any questions, I would be glad to share my knowledge anytime. ***@**** and goodluck to all.

i had my appendix out last Feb , on my 25th birthday ...(what a present , right?) but when they did the mri, the docs saw bilateral  ovarian cysts but refused to offer suggestions for treatment because i was uninsured and they were "surgeons, not gynocologists" (their words)...Anyway about 9 more mnths of heavy periods later , i manage to afford health insurance and find out via ultrasound that i have a 4.4 centimeter hemmorragic ovarian cyst which my doctor thinks i should let simply exist for 6-8 weeks MORE. I dont want to let it go for so long. I requested a ca-125 test but want to know what else i should do, besides getting rid of my current doctor ( who's english i can't really understand anyway)
any suggestions?
